Bertelsen's walk-off & Kluever's 1-hitter drive two victories

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (9-5) remained on fire on Florida with a pair of wins on Saturday morning and has now won 5-straight and seven of its last eight games. In game one, Cassie Bertelsen (Oakdale, Minn.) hit a walk-off home run in a 2-1 win over Fayetteville State (0-9) before Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn. ) threw her second-straight 1-hitter and third-straight shutout in a 5-0 win over Saginaw Valley State (0-2) at Osceola Sports Complex at the Rebel Spring Games.

Concordia's pitching staff has only allowed one run on 16 hits over the last five games.

Bertelsen's homer was her second of the year, becoming the first Golden Bear to hit multiple home runs this season. She went 2-3, adding an RBI double in the second inning to account for both RBI in the game. She went 3-6 in the doubleheader to lead all Golden Bear hitters.

Kluever imrpoved to 6-3 and lowered her ERA to 2.93. With eight strikeouts today, Kluever has fanned 26 over her last 19 innings in three shutout starts, surrendering just seven total hits.

GAME 1: Concordia 2, Fayetteville State 1
Concordia reached the scoreboard first in the second inning when Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) led off with a single and stole second base. With two outs, Bertelsen delivered the RBI double. Larsen and Bertelsen were both 2-3 in the game.

After stranding three runners in scoring position over the first four innings, FSU finally scratched a run across against Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) with a 2-out RBI single. They left runners on second and third in the sixth inning as Kappes was clutch pitching out of trouble in the game, forcing six runners left on base and a runner thrown out at home.

Concordia also struggled with runners in scoring position, leaving four in the game.

Kappes picked up the win, improving to 3-2 on the year. She struck out eight and walked one while scattering six hits over 7.0 innings.

GAME 2: Concordia 5, Saginaw Valley 0
Kluever's only blemish in game two was a 2-out single through the right side. SV only had one runner reach scoring position after Kluever issued a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, advancing on a sacrifice bunt. It was one of just two walks as only three SV hitters reached base in the game, adding a 2-out walk in the seventh inning.

In the fourth inning, Jamie Fleischhacker (Maplewood, Minn.) led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Concordia added four unearned runs on just one hit in the top of the seventh inning to pad Kluever's lead.

The Golden Bears play two more at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow against Quincy and Wheeling Jesuit.
