ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (5-5) will take on Winona State (6-6) this Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at the Metrodome for a non-conference doubleheader.
The games mark Concordia's final non-conference games before a grueling 36-game Northern Sun slate that begins March 23-24 against Minot State in Minnetonka, Minn. at Veterans Field.
Concordia's early season has been marked by strong pitching and defense which has kept games close. The team has committed only six total errors in 10 completed contests and the pitching staff has compiled a 3.91 earned run average.
Like last Friday's contests against Missouri S&T, a Concordia sweep, look for right handers
Adam Kramer and
Andy Fagely to toe the rubber. They are a combined 2-1 in five starts with 29.1 innings and a 3.07 earned run average. The tandem also owns a 22-4 strikeout-walk ratio and a 1.13 WHIP. The duo each picked up their first wins of the year in their last starts against the Miners.
Winona State has played a challenging non-conference schedule with mixed results. The Warriors were swept by Augustana but split with nationally-ranked Minnesota State and Grand Valley State. They've won six of their last nine games after an 0-3 start.
Expect the Warriors to start Brandon Verthein (0-2, 6.97) and Chase Blazier (3-0, 1.06) in the doubleheader. Another candidate is Tyler Zemla (1-1, 7.88).
