Kluever's shutout helps Golden Bears to split

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (5-5) only managed one run in two games, getting outscored 7-1 in the two games combined, but it was enough for a split. The Golden Bears lost 7-0 to Upper Iowa (4-3) in the first game before senior right handed pitcher Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) twirled a complete game shutout in a 1-0 win over Truman (7-3) in the finale at the Central Region Crossover at RCTC Dome.

GAME 1: Upper Iowa 7, Concordia 0
The Golden Bears had plenty of chances, leaving six runners in scoring position in the game. But Upper Iowa provided too much muscle with seven runs on 11 hits.

Tessa Ewert (Hutchinson, Minn.) went 2-3 and Jamie Fleischhacker (Maplewood, Minn) went 1-3 with each producing doubles. Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) added a hit each, and each stole a base. Meiser swiped her 11th while Larsen stole her fourth of the season.

The loss was charged to Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.), who worked through four innings while falling to 1-2. Teona Zepeda (Woodbury, Minn.) made her debut in the circle in relief, allowing a solo home run as the only hit against her in two innings.

Upper Iowa's Brooke Redmond picked up the win with a complete game shutout, striking out six Golden Bears to just one walk while scattering six hits and pitching out of multiple jams.

GAME 2: Concordia 1, Truman 0

Zepeda singled and stole a base and was driven home by a two-out RBI single by Larsen for the game-winning run with two outs. That was in the first inning.

The Golden Bears didn't reach base safely the rest of the game as Truman's Hannah Washburn retired the final 16 batters of the game and finished with eight strikeouts.

She was out-dueled by Kluever, who was the headliner of the day. She tossed her first shutout of the season while improving to 4-3 on the year. The Bulldogs put runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings against Kluever but she slammed the door each time. She ended three of those innings via the strikeout and had a key strikeout for the second out another.

She finished with nine strikeouts while scattering five hits and three walks. The Bulldogs put a runner on third three times in the game.

Concordia returns to action for eight games in Kissimmee, Fla. for the Rebel Spring Games next Friday, March 1 through Monday, March 4.
