Golden Bears coast in 15-point win at 15th-ranked Winona State

WINONA, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (8-15, 6-13 NSIC) picked up its fourth straight win in convincing fashion, 89-74 at #15 Winona State (21-5, 15-4) on Friday night at McCown Gymnasium. The Golden Bears have scored at least 85 points during the season-long four game winning streak.

The win was Concordia's third at McCown Gym in the last five trips, all under seventh year head coach Kelly Boe - the only coach in program history to beat the Warriors.

Concordia led by as many as 23 points. Sophomore guard Cole Olstad (Elgin, Minn.) connected on his first five three-pointers in the first half, while senior forward Isaiah Thomas (Fridley, Minn.) connected on five of seven from downtown in the second half.

Olstad finished with 23 points on the night while Thomas had 15 points and seven rebounds.

The duo set the tone for the squad in making 15 three-pointers in 26 attempts (57.7%) on the night.

Concordia led by as many as 23 points in the second half and never trailed after Olstad's three-pointer under a minute and a half into the game gave Concordia a 3-2 lead.

Junior swing man Cordell Smith (Mequon, Wis.) led Concordia in rebounding for the sixth straight game since being inserted into the starting lineup. He finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, three steals and knocked down three from behind the arc. Concordia is 5-1 since he's become a starter.

Sophomore point guard Terez VanPelt (Osseo, Minn.) had perhaps the individual line of the night, though. He had his first career double-double with 16 points and 11 assists and was efficient from the floor (6-8) and perfect from the line (4-4) and had just two turnovers in 34 minutes for a 5.5 assist/turnover ratio.

While Concordia was lights-out from the perimeter, they also were solid inside with a 33-31 rebounding margin that hovered between an 8-to-10 margin for most of the night until the closing minutes when the benches were emptied. Concordia also forced 18 turnovers while committing 11 which led to a 26-14 margin in points off turnovers.

Concordia didn't really have an answer for Winona State big man Clayton Vette, who led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds while converting 8-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-11 at the line. He also had three assists and two blocks, backing up the previous two NSIC Player of the Week selections.

Aside from Vette, though, the Warriors were 15-of-40 from the floor and had only 20 rebounds.

The second-ranked free throw shooting team in the country, Concordia converted 82.4% (14-17) on the night, above the season rate of 78.9% entering play.

Concordia's bench was led by senior Nick Mabbutt (Milton Keynes, UK) with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 26 minutes. Sophomore guard DJ Lewis (New Orleans) added five assists, three rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes.

The Golden Bears tied a season-high in points (89), and established new season-highs in three-pointers (15) and assists (24). They've made 10-plus three-pointers in each of their four wins during the current streak.

They'll head to Fayette, Iowa for an 8 p.m. tip tomorrow night against Upper Iowa at Dorman Gym where they are 6-2 all-time.
