Whiting powers Golden Bear win at Minot State

MINOT, N.D. - In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Concordia-St. Paul (14-5, 12-3 NSIC) picked up a 20-point win (85-65) at Minot State (9-10, 5-10) at the Minot State Dome on Firday night. Concordia remains in first in the NSIC overall and in the south division, extending its overall winning streak to six games, its road win streak to eight games as the team has won 11 of its past 12 games.

The game featured four ties and one lead change and all occurred in the first half. After Minot State opened a 10-8 lead in a high scoring first two minutes, the Golden Bears rattled off nine straight points over the next four and a half minutes with four different players scoring for Concordia.

It appeared as if the Golden Bears had taken control, pusing the lead to 10, 22-12.

The Beavers rallied, however, and would chip away until the game was tied for the fourth time at 33-33 with just under four and a half minutes to play in the half.

Concordia went on a 6-1 spurt to end the half with a five point lead (39-34) and stayed hot to start the second half, opening the lead back to nine points (45-36) to cap a 12-3 spree that put them ahead for good.

By the 12:47 mark of the second half, Concordia led by 17 with a 22-5 run spanning nearly 11 minutes of play after the game's last tie.

From there, the margin was never closer than 10 points, 63-53, when Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn.) drained a three-pointer to pull away. Wolyniec finished with 16 points including four three-pointers.

The Golden Bears were led by Anika Whiting's (Ashland, Wis.) game-high 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Rachel Hansen addd 12 points, three assists and two steals. She shot just twice, making both field goals, and was 8-of-9 at the line.

Concordia had two more in double-figures, freshman Jasmine Haynes (Robbinsdale, Minn.) and sophomore Amanda Barton (Waterville, Minn.) each with 11.

Concordia's defense was once again strong, holding the Beavers to 32.3% (20-62) shooting on their own floor. The Beavers only made 25.0% (4-16) from long range as well. Minot State was led by Sacarra Molina and Francesca DeAngelis with 13 points each.

Inside, Minot State out-rebounded the Golden Bears 44-35 including a 17-7 edge on the offensive glass. Minot State's Carly Boag hauled in 17 rebounds and added nine points.

Concordia shot significantly better, hitting 49.2% (31-63) from the field but were just 6-of-26 (.231) from deep.

The Golden Bears remain on the road and in North Dakota tomorrow with a 4 p.m. tip at McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D. against the University of Mary (8-7 NSIC). The Marauders were defeated in overtime tonight by Minnesota State.
