WINONA, Minn. -
Despite 57 second half points, Concordia-St. Paul (2-1) dropped its first game of the 2013-14 season 91-84 to Northwood (Mich.) University (2-2) on Saturday afternoon at McCown Gymnasium on the campus of Winona State University.

Concordia shot 54.1% (20-37) and hit eight three-pointers in the second half to outscore the Timberwolves by 10 points in a comeback attempt.

But a sluggish offensive first half saw the Golden Bears shoot just 25.8% (8-31) from the floor as they trailed 44-27 at the break.

Northwood countered with two consistent shooting halves, hitting 50.0% (17-34) in the first and 57.7% (15-26) in the second for a game total of 53.3% (32-60). Concordia's game total ended at 41.2% (28-68).

The Golden Bears attempted to offset the shooting disparity by doubling up Northwood on the offensive glass (16-8) which led to a 22-9 margin in second chance scoring. Concordia also hit more frequently from beyond the arc, making 12 three-pointers led by junior Keith Crockett's four made three's (4-6) as the guard finished with 14 points.

Three others connected on at least two three-pointers for the Golden Bears in the loss.

Juniors Cole Olstad and Terez VanPelt produced team leading 17 point performances, with Olstad hitting three three-pointers.

Two players scored double-figures off the bench, junior Travon Mitchell and senior Cordell Smith with 12 each. Smith also led the team with seven rebounds while playing 19 minutes in his season debut after finishing the football season last Sunday.

Northwood's three-headed monster of Dylan Langkabel, Wes Wilcox and Will Bowles clicked today led by Wilcox with 29 points and eight rebounds. Langkabel added 21 points and connected on four triples while Bowles had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Northwood led by as many as 19 points with 13:18 to play in the game (62-43) before Concordia made the comeback run. First, Concordia brought the lead to 10, 66-56, with a 13-4 spurt over five and a half minutes.

With the lead hovering in the lower double digits for the next four-plus minutes, Concordia made its next run. The Golden Bears outscored the Timberwolves 11-4 over a near-three minute stretch to trim the margin to six, 82-76, with 1:40 to play.

But Concordia would get no closer than five points down the rest of the way and never had the ball with a chance to get closer.

Concordia continues action at McCown Gym tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Ferris State.
