Men's basketball to host Waldorf on Saturday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. -
The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (1-0) will take on Waldorf College (3-2) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Gangelhoff Center in non-conference play.

The game will be the third leg of a triple-header, following two women's games at 3 p.m. (MSU Moorhead vs. Michigan Tech) and 5 p.m. (Concordia vs. UW-Parkside).

Waldorf, an NAIA member, will be counting the game toward's its exhibition slate despite already having played five games. The Warriors dropped a 94-50 game at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. on Friday evening, a game that was an exhibition for Waldorf but was fifth-ranked MSU's fourth game of the regular season.

Concordia is coming off a win on Monday night in the season opener at home over Mayville State with Cole Olstad leading the way with 17 points on just seven shots. Five players scored in double-figures in the 73-62 win in a game that Concordia led by as many as 17 points with three and a half minutes to play.

The two teams have met each of the last two years at Gangelhoff Center with Concordia winning 78-68 in 2011-12 and 76-70 last year in 2012-13.

In last year's game, Concordia led by as many as 11 with just over four minutes to play in a game that featured five ties and 10 lead changes. Terez VanPelt led all scorers with 22 points while dishing five assists and playing all 40 minutes. Cole Olstad had 14 points, six steals and four assists (one turnover) as well. Waldorf had five players hit double-figures led by Jordan Nelslon's 15 points but the Warriors committed 20 turnovers.

In the previous meeting, VanPelt started as a true freshman, scoring 10 points with three assists in 20 minutes while fellow freshman Cole Olstad added six points off the bench in 15 minutes.

Following Concordia's second regular season game on Saturday night, the club will travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Northwood and Ferris State with the games being held on Winona State's campus. Both games next weekend will have 1 p.m. tip-offs at McCown Gymnasium on Saturday and Sunday.
