#9 Concordia falls short in top-10 showdown in California

ANAHEIM, Calif. - In an early season top-10 clash, #9 Concordia-St. Paul (2-1) dropped its first game of the year to #5 Emporia State (3-0), 72-51 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the final game of the CCA Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Coach Paul Fessler was pleased with the team's 2-1 result in the tournament, "A lot of people contributed and that will help us in the long run. We're still a work in progress and the ladies are excited for the home opener."

The Golden Bears open up their home slate in the Radisson Roseville Classic this Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. against #21 Michigan Tech, and will face Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, November 16 at 5 p.m.
Emporia State used hot shooting, solid defense and control of the glass to pull away from the Golden Bears. Anika Whiting was a bright spot for the Golden Bears, finishing the game with 19 points on 7-16 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets jumped out of the gate and set the tone early by scoring the first five points in the opening minutes as Concordia missed their first four shots of the game. The Golden Bears bounced back and took a lead at 13-12 in the half but eight straight points for Emporia State gave them a 20-13 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the half. Another 11-0 run for the Lady Hornets turned a 25-20 lead into a 16 point advantage with 1:42 left before the break. Concordia trimmed a point off the lead but went into the half down 41-26.

Concordia shot just 9-32 (28.1%) from the floor and 1-7 (14.3%) from three in the half. The Lady Hornets, on the other hand, shot 15-28 (53.6%) and 5-7 (71.4%) from beyond the arc.

Whiting had a team-high six points on nine shots in the first half while Amanda Barton and Carissa Wolyniec each chipped five points.

The Golden Bears scored six of the first eight points to begin the second half to cut the lead to 11 but they would not get any closer. The Emporia State lead hit 20 on a Marissa Quick jumper with 9:37 left as they took a 56-36 advantage. CU would cut it back down to 15 but a 13-4 swing in favor of ESU put it away, giving the Lady Hornets a 71-47 lead with 3:08 left. A bucket from Jordyn Dudley and a free throw from Voneisha Harris in the closing moments brought the lead back under 20 as Emporia State claimed a 71-52 win.

Concordia's defense slowed ESU down a bit more in the second half, holding them to 35.3% shooting but a 27-16 advantage on the boards in the half allowed the Lady Hornets to extend their lead.

Rachel Hansen scored eight and Barton finished with seven points as the Golden Bears were held to just 31.1% shooting for the game.

Amber Vandiver, Laura Patrick, Kelly Moten and Rheanna Egli all scored in double digits for the Lady Hornets as they featured a balanced offensive attack.
