BISMARCK, N.D. - The #1 Concordia University Golden Bears volleyball team (22-1, 14-0 NSIC) cruised past the Mary Marauders (4-17, 1-13 NSIC) in straight sets Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears extended their winning streak to 20 overall, two shy of their streak to start the 2011 season, and 28 in NSIC regular season play. CU also improves to 12-0 all-time against U-Mary.
Kayla Koenecke did it all for the Golden Bears with 16 kills, six assists and four digs with a .619 hitting percentage. Emily McDonough went into double digits in kills for the fifth straight match with 12 on only 16 attempts to hit .688. She also picked up eight digs. Amanda Konetchy, the NCAA leader in assists per set, added 40 assists on the Golden Bears 48 kills. Concordia hit an incredible .547 as team, the third best mark in school history.
The Marauders battled back from an early 7-1 deficit to shrink the lead to three at 11-8 but were unable to get any closer as the Golden Bears ran away with a 25-14 win in the first.
Concordia held a small lead again part way through the second set at 11-9 when CU used a 10-2 run in the set to open it and once again pull away from U-Mary for a 25-16 win to go up 2-0.
The third set followed the same trajectory with the score being tight part way through the set, this time with the score being tied at 7, before Concordia put it away with 16-5 run to close out the match with a 25-13 set win.
The Golden Bears return home for Parent Night against MSU Moorhead on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and Senior Day against #25 Northern State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
