MINOT, N.D. - The top ranked Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears (21-1, 13-0 NSIC) outlasted the Minot State Beavers (9-13, 5-8 NSIC) in a four set victory on Friday night. Concordia's winning streak has hit 19, dating back to September 7th.
Emily McDonough continued her solid play with her ninth double-double on the year. She had a team high 20 kills and added 16 digs. Kayla Koenecke hit an efficient .438 en route to 17 kills and 13 digs for her 12th double-double of the season as well. Erienne Lauersdorf also had a nice night with 18 kills, two aces and three blocks. Amanda Konetchy was the third member to join the double-double club with 58 assists and 10 digs while guiding a CU offense that hit .327 as a team. Defensively, The Golden Bears got stellar performances from Heather Schiller, who finished with eight blocks, and Taylor Dordan, who led the team with 18 digs.
The Beavers proved to be tough to put away for the Golden Bears. In the first set CU ran out to an early 9-4 lead before seeing their comfortable lead shrink to one at 16-15. Concordia rebounded to take the first 25-17, but it only got tougher from there.
In the second set, Concordia once again controlled an early lead at 9-7 but it wouldn't last. Minot State grabbed the momentum by using a 13-4 run to gain a strong 20-13 edge, but the young squad was unable to hold off the veteran Bears. Concordia still trailed 24-21 at set point but answered with a 5-0 run to steal the second set from MSU.
The third set was a back and forth battle with the two teams trading the lead. Minot took the lead for good at 23-22 and won the set 25-23 to extend the match to a fourth set.
Minot State looked poised to send the match to a deciding fifth set after grabbing a 6-1 lead out of the gate, but in typical CU fashion the Golden Bears quickly erased that deficit and tied it at eight apiece. The set stayed even at 12-all before Concordia surged to a 25-15 victory to take the match 3-1.
The Beavers received double-doubles from Jen Dixon, Mallory Sall and Emily Byrne.
Concordia is back in action tomorrow afternoon in Bismarck to take on the Mary Marauders.
