ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University soccer team (3-5-0, 2-3-0 NSIC) is set to kick off homecoming festivities with a match against the University of Mary (1-6-1, 1-3-1 NSIC) on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. They return to Sea Foam Stadium to finish the weekend with Minot State (1-4-2, 1-3-1 NSIC) coming to town.
Last weekend, Concordia allowed only one goal in their split with a 1-0 loss to Northern State and a 1-0 win over MSU Moorhead. A late goal in Saturday's match against the Wolves was the deciding marker while Sunday's match was an early goal that decided it against the Dragons. Kuczaboski got the start in net for the Golden Bears on Sunday against MSU Moorhead and picked up her first shutout of the season. After her team spotted her a 1-0 lead just 1:12 into the game and she took it from there. The Dragons put pressure on her throughout the match, attempting 15 shots (nine on goal) and Kuczaboski turned them all away. She improved to 2-1 on the season with a 1.33 goals against average. Alahna Anderson picked up Concordia's game winning goal on Sunday. Her two goals on the season are tied with McKenzie Buck for most on the team.
The Golden Bears will be looking to snap an 11 match winless streak to U-Mary, going 0-10-1 in the first 12 meetings between the teams. CU came close to breaking out in a 3-2 OT loss against the Marauders last year. U-Mary is coming off being swept by Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday and Sunday. They were held scoreless on the weekend with a 3-0 loss to the Peacocks and a 1-0 loss to the Warriors. The Marauders lone win this year came against Sioux Falls with a 3-0 win. U-Mary has been held scoreless in six of their eight matches.
The Minot State Beavers beat Concordia in Minot, N.D. last season in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Jess Bianchi picked up the lone goal for CU in the 2-1 loss. Minot State also dropped a pair of matches with Winona State and Upper Iowa. Both games were one goal games with a 2-1 loss to WSU and a 1-0 loss to UIU. The Beavers only win also came against Sioux Falls. Chloe Melton and Kayla Schlittenhart are tied for the team lead with two goals each.
