The Golden Bears and Mustangs battled early on in what looked like another hard fought match between these two conference stalwarts, but a five point run midway through the first set turned the momentum in the Golden Bears favor as they grabbed a 16-11 lead. SMSU got it back to 18-15 but CU used a solid serve from Erienne Lauersdorf to score the last seven of the game to close it out 25-15.
Southwest Minnesota State played from behind for much of the second game and got it back even at 10 apiece, but Concordia would not relinquish the lead. The Mustangs committed seven attack errors in the game which stifled any comeback attempt in the 25-18 set win for the Golden Bears.
It seemed to be a repeat performance in the third set with the score being tied 12-12 midway through the set before Concordia turned it on and closed it out. The Golden Bear scored nine of the last 11 points to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
The big story of the match was sloppy play from the Mustangs as they finished the match with 22 attack errors and a .146 attack percentage. Abbey Thissen led the way with 11 kills for SMSU and Whitney Burmeister chipped in 12 digs.
The individual numbers didn't jump off the page for the Golden Bears with only Emily McDonough finishing in double digits in kills with 10. She also had 10 digs to pick up her seventh double-double of the year. Taylor Dordan led the Golden Bears with 11 kills and also added an ace. Setter Amanda Konetchy assisted on 30 of the team's 36 kills and led the offense to a .300 attack percentage for the match.
Top ranked Concordia is back on the road for three matches this week with a midweek bout with Minnesota State before two on the weekend against Minot State and U-Mary.
