VanPelt's 20 points not enough for Golden Bears at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-13, 1-11 NSIC) was unable to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season in a 97-60 road loss at St. Cloud State (13-3, 9-3) on Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall.

Concordia was led by sophomore guard Terez VanPelt (Osseo, Minn.) with a game-high 20 points. He shot 6-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the line while playing 30 minutes.

Sophomore Cole Olstad (Elgin, Minn.) was Concordia's only other player to score more than six points in the game, as he added 12 points and four rebounds in 28 minutes.

The loss to the Huskies ends a two game winning streak for the Golden Bears at Halenbeck Hall as Concordia had won three of the last four games against SCSU overall.

The Golden Bears didn't hold a lead in a game that started slow on both sides with the first basket coming over two minutes into the game by SCSU's Theo Rothstein. He would lead the Huskies in both scoring (14) and rebounding (7) in the game, adding four assists.

SCSU first expanded the lead to double-digits at 21-10 with 11:08 to play in the half and a few minutes later used a 9-0 run on three-straight three-pointers to push the margin to 18 points, 32-14 with 8:12 to play.

Concordia wasn't within 15 points the rest of the night, and after trailing by 23 at the break (46-23), the Golden Bears never trimmed the SCSU lead under 20 in the second half.

The Golden Bears shot 43.5% (20-46) from the floor for the game but struggled from long range, hitting just 2-of-13 (15.4%). Once again, the team was solid at the line, hitting 85.7% (18-21).

St. Cloud State countered by shooting 56.5% (39-69) including 64.5% (20-31) in the second half. SCSU was 8-of-17 (.471) from three-point range as well.

The biggest disparity between the teams, though, was Concordia's 7-to-24 assist-turnover ratio against St. Cloud State's 25-to-8 ratio. The Huskies capitalized with a 30-8 margin in points off turnovers.

For Concordia, VanPelt has scored at least 13 points in every game this season and is averaging 19.3 for the year. In three games this week, VanPelt averaged 20.0 points and 5.0 assists. He's made 38 of his last 39 free throws and went nearly five full games without missing a free throw for a streak that spanned 30 at the line. In the three games last week, VanPelt shot 18-of-33 (54.5%) from the floor and 22-of-23 (95.7%) at the line.

He's now shooting 84.3% at the foul line on the year, while his 19.3 points and 4.3 assists per game should rank third in the league when NSIC stats are published.

Concordia returns home next Friday against Augustana and Saturday against Wayne State.
