DENVER - The Concordia University volleyball team got back to its winning ways Friday night at the Colorado Premier Challenge by defeating Lewis University 3-1. The Golden Bears won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-12, 21-25 and 25-14, improving to 4-1 overall on the young season.
CU was in control throughout the entire first set, scoring the first point and never lost lost the lead en route to a 25-19 decision. The second set was the most impressive for the Golden Bears as they started on a 4-0 run and allowed only 12 points. They ended the set by scoring the final five points.
Lewis got on the scoreboard in the third set by a mark of 25-21. The two squads played through three lead changes and 12 ties, but with the score tied 21-21 the Flyers pulled ahead and tallied the final four points for the win.
The Golden Bears put the match to rest in the fourth with a commanding 8-1 lead early. The Flyers pulled within five points at 19-14, but the Bears put the game in the books with six consective points for the 25-14 decision.
Sophomore
Katie Habeck (Farmington, Minn. ) led CU on the attack with 14 kills in 27 attempts for a .370 attack percentage.
Kara Pioske (Waconia, Minn. ) was in a close second with 13 kills in 31 attempts (.323). First-year
Taylor Dordan (Blaine, Minn.) got her second start of the year at libero and recorded a team-high 20 digs. And as usual,
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) served up the offense with 45 assists.
Concordia returns to the court Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. CST in the Silver match-up against Pool IV's No. 2 team Metro State.
