ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia University completed a three-game sweep at the Wildwood Lodge Volleyball Classic after shutting out Hillsdale College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center. The Golden Bears made quick work of the Chargers, winning the match in under an hour by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn. ) led the Golden Bear offense with 10 kills on 18 attempts (.444), while
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) served up 34 of the team's 40 assists. First-year
Taylor Dordan (Blaine, Minn.) got her first start at libero and responded with a team-high 13 digs.
Hillsdale scored the first point of set one, but that would be its only lead of the set. Concordia answered with four unanswered points and never gave up the lead. The Bears shot .500-percent on the attack in the opening set.
In the second set, the Chargers again got an early lead at 2-1 but CU went on a six-point run to lead 7-2. Hillsdale claimed six of the next nine points, but the Golden Bears went on another spree – this time scoring four in a row – and didn't allow the Chargers to get within five points the rest of the set.
CU controlled the third set from the beginning, gaining a 5-1 lead. The visitors only saw two scoring runs in the whole set and the result was a 25-18 decision.
Next up for the Golden Bears is the Colorado Premier Challenge on September 7-8 in Denver, Colo. CU will take on West Florida on Friday at 12:00 p.m. and No. 18 Lewis University at 7:00 p.m. Opponents and game times on Saturday will be determined by Friday's outcome.
