The Concordia University volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 shutout over Regis University Friday afternoon in the first day of the Wildwood Lodge Volleyball Classic. The Golden Bears won by scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-14.
Seniors
Ellie Duffy (Fridley, Minn. ) and
Cassie Haag (Plymouth, Minn. ) led the Golden Bears at the net with 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Haag missed only five of her 19 total attacks for a .737 percentage, while Duffy went 17-for-31 (.419). Duffy also notched a double-double with 12 digs, along with
Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn. ) who recorded 10 assists and 12 digs.
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) spread the ball out with 42 assists and
Kara Pioske (Waconia, Minn. ) led the squad with 18 digs.
Regis jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set on three kills and three errors on Concordia. But the Golden Bears settled down and took the lead with four consecutive points. Concordia never trailed again throughout all three sets.
Regis couldn't string together consecutive scoring opportunities after giving up the lead, while CU tallied four scoring sprees.
The Golden Bears made quick work in the second set by jumping out to a 20-5 lead. The Rangers went on a 6-to-3 run late in the set, but CU pulled away for the 25-11 decision.
In the third set, Concordia started on a 4-0 run and slowly pulled away for the deciding 25-14 set.
Caitie Breaux led the Rangers with eight kills, while Jaclyn Williamson tallied a team-high 12 assists.
Concordia's next opponent at the round robin tournament will take place tonight at 7:00 p.m. against No. 20 BYU-Hawaii.
