Golden Bears Clinch 6th Spot in NSIC Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia (28-19, 13-11 NSIC) clinched a spot in the NSIC Tournament later this week with a sweep of Minnesota State Moorhead (9-34, 5-21 NSIC) with a pair of five inning wins. Concordia got a 10-2 win the the first game and 10-2 in the second game. Concordia clinches the sixth spot in the NSIC Tournament later this week in as they finish 13-11 in the NSIC. GAME 1

Aj Hoefer gave the Dragons the early lead as she smacked a homer to right with two outs to put MSU Moorhead up 1-0 after the top of the first. Concordia came right back at the Dragons in the bottom of the first. Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) reached on a infield single and then stole second to star the threat. Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) doubled down the line in left to score Meiser. Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) hit a soft single up the middle and Brennan rounded third to far and was cut down at home, Tjornhom was able to move up the third on the play. Tjornhom scored on the next play as Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) singled to short and picking up the RBI. The inning stayed alive as Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) singled  through the right side allowing M. Feuerbach to go to third and then Larsen moved up to second on the throw. Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) kept it going singling up the middle and scoring both M. Feuerbach and Larsen to make it 4-1 in favor of CU. Cassie Bertlesen (Oakdale, Minn.) reached via a throwing error to by the short stop and moved up to second because of the throwing error, Roth moved to third. Tessa Ewert (Hutchinson, Minn.) then reached on a fielding error and two more runs crossed the plate. By the end of the inning Concordia put 12 batters up and scored six runs on seven hits.

Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) put the Dragons down in order in the top of the second. M. Feuerbach had one out single up the middle but that was all they could manage in the bottom of the second. In the top the third MSU Moorhead again went down in order as Kluever got some help defensively from the two seniors from Henry Sibley High School. The Golden Bears picked up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the CU picked up four hits in the inning. With one out Anderson singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Ewert who was on third scored thanks to an errant throw by the Dragons catcher and Anderson moved up to third. Meiser than singled up the middle scoring Anderson. Meiser would score the third run of the inning as she scored on the two out single up the middle by Tjornhom making it 9-1 after three.

The Dragons got one back in the top of the fourth as Amanda Moore put over the fence in right field off the Gangelhoff Center. Roth picked a walk in the bottom of the fourth but failed Concordia was unable to do much else in the inning taking the 9-2 lead into the fifth inning. Kluever got herself in to a jam in the top of fifth as she allowed a single and then walked two to load the bases with one out. Kluever then got a shallow fly out to left and pop to Katie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) at third to end the inning.

Anderson reached on four pitch walk to start the inning and immediately moved to second on a wild pitch. Meiser grounded out to short stop as Anderson moved to third on the play. K. Feuerbach ended the game as she singled through the left side scoring Meiser and ending the game as CU won 10-2.

GAME 2

Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) started game two for the Golden Bears, she also allowed the Dragons to get the first lead of the game as MSU Moorhead picked up a run in the first. Again Concordia responded in the bottom of the first innings. Anderson and Meiser reached on a infield singles to start the inning. After a pop up from Brennan and passed ball that allowed both to move up. Tjornhom hit a grounder to short and the Dragons tried to come home to get Anderson but were unable to and Tjornhom moved up to second. Missie Feuerbach successfully completed the squeeze play to score Meiser from second. Larsen then singled off the pitcher allowing Tjornhom to score and making it 3-1 in favor of CU. Bertlesen came through with the big hit of the inning as she hit a double to right center scoring Larsen and Roth, who had singled up the middle the batter before. Concordia would end up scoring five runs on five hits in the inning.

Kappes pitched around a pair of singles in the first as she kept the Dragons off the board in the the second inning. The Golden Bears extended their lead in the second inning as they would chase MSU Moorhead starter Amanda Lynch. Anderson tripled to the wall in right center and then scored on sac fly from Brennan for the second out of the inning. Tjornhom then doubled to right center and scored as M. Feuerbach lifted a ball over the wall in left field for her eighth homer of the season and making it 8-1. Larsen kept the inning alive singling up the middle before Roth hit her third homer of the season giving CU the 10-1 lead after two innings.

Minnesota State Moorhead again threatened in the third inning putting runner on first and second to leadoff the inning but was unable to score as Kappes retired the next three to end the threat. Anderson reached on a one out infield single in the bottom of the third but the Dragons relief pitcher Alexa D'Onofrio kept CU off the board for the first time in an inning in game two.

Kappes put the Dragons down in order for the first time all game in the top of the fourth as CU came to the plate with a 10-1 lead. The Golden Bears followed the Dragons as they also went down in order in their half of the fifth inning. Kappes completed the game putting MSUM down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning.
