Golden Bears Sweep Mary, Win Fourth Straight

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears (20-11, 5-3 NSIC) picked up their fourth straight win as they picked up the sweep over Mary (14-11, 5-5 NSIC). Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) picked up complete game wins in the double header. Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) drove in three in the two games leading CU offensively. GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

GAME 1

Mary got the lead off runner in the top of the first with bunt in front of the plate. The next batter sacrificed her to second but two straight fly outs to right end the inning. Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) had bunt single with one out and the stole second as CU threatened in the bottom of the first. She moved to third but was stranded there as Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) lined out to the pitcher to end the inning.

The Golden Bears defense helped starter Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) in the second as Tjornhom threw out Kristin Ormsby trying to stretch a single into a double. Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) reached on an error to start the second but was quickly cut down on a double play and CU went down without another baserunner that inning.

The first batter was retired in the top of the third but two straight singles and sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. A throw back to the mound was dropped by Kluever and allowed a runner to score. Up next Allison Brown doubled to left center to drive in a run making it 2-0 in favor of Mary after two and a half.

Three straight singles loaded the bases with nobody out for CU in their half of the third inning, bringing Meiser to the plate. Meiser reached on a fielder's choice but Cassie Bertelsen (Oakdale, Minn.) was cut down at home as the short stop threw home for the force out. Calli Brennan (Mendota Heights, Minn.) flied out to shallow right and then Tjornhom popped up to third as CU left the bases loaded. Kluever sat down Mary in order in the fourth inning to keep CU within striking distance. The Golden Bears got a leadoff double down the left field line from Larsen. Bekah Roth (Shoreview Minn.) advanced Larsen to third with a single bringing up Bertelsen. Bertlesen delivered with a sac fly to right scoring Larsen and the inning ended with CU trailing just 2-1.

U-Mary got a lead off single but couldn't do anything else in the inning as the game stayed 2-1. Concordia got a lead off single from Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) who then stole second. Meiser singled to left field allowing Anderson to move up. Meiser stole her second base of the game to put runners on second and third and nobody away. Brennan tied the game with a RBI single to center scoring Anderson, Meiser was thrown out at home by Mary center fielder Jenna Button. Tjornhom popped up to short and Larsen grounded out to third ending the inning but not before CU tied the game at two.

In the top of the sixth inning Mary had a runner on but could not take advantage for the third straight inning as the game stayed tied going to the bottom of the sixth inning. For the second straight inning CU had a lead off double, this time from Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa.) as she hit one to the fence in right center. The Golden Bears could not come through this time as she is left on second after three straight outs.

With the game tied headed to the seventh, Mary got a single from Button and a Jessica Alvarado reached on an error but Kluever was able get an out via a sac bunt and then a ground out to third ending the inning. Meiser reached on a one out single and then Brennan got on via an error by the first baseman putting runners on first and second with one out and Tjornhom at the plate. Mary went to the bullpen and put in Rachel Davis to face Tjornhom hit one up the middle scoring Meiser and giving the Golden Bears the win via the walk off.

GAME 2

Button kept hitting game two for Mary, leading off with a single to short. She moved up to second after a ground out third but was cut down trying to take third. Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) got a strikeout to end the inning. Anderson and Meiser singled to start the bottom of the first and advanced on a wild pitch with Brennan at the plate. Brennan picked up a ground out RBI to short and then Tjornhom squeezed home Meiser putting CU up 2-0 off the bat.. Tjornhom stole second with Larsen at the plate before Larsen hit a double to right center keeping the inning going. The inning would end with CU up 2-0.

Both Mary and Concordia had a runner on the second but failed to score. Concordia got a double play to get out of their jam and U-Mary's Emily Sinclair pitched around a one out walk. Mary went down in order in the top of the third inning as Kappes continued to keep the Marauders off the scoreboard. Concordia also went down in order in third as the Mary ace, Sinclair was settling down.

Mary loaded the bases up with two outs in their half of the fourth but Kappes got a pop up to second to end the threat. CU also threatened in the the fourth inning getting a lead off single from M. Feuerbach but could not add to the lead as three straight outs followed.

For the second straight inning Mary loaded the bases, this time with just one out as the number two hitter Alvarado came to the plate against Kappes. Kappes got a big fly ball out to right field and then took advantage of base running mistake by Mary to get out of the inning. The scoring play was 2-4-2 on the play as the runner from second was caught off the bag, she was forced to third making the runner on third to head home where she was tagged out by M. Feuerbach.

The Golden Bears got back to back singles by Anderson and Meiser to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning putting runners on first and third with no outs. Brennan picked up a sac fly to left scoring Anderson. After Meiser stole second Tjornhom singled through the left side putting runners on first and third once again. It was then Larsen's turn to pick up a sac fly to left scoring Meiser and putting CU up 4-0. The inning ended with CU up 4-0 as the Golden Bears used their speed in the inning picking up three stolen bases and scoring twice on sac flies to left field.

Mary struck back in the sixth inning making it a game once again. Back to back singles started the rally and a run scored on fielder's choice thanks to a throwing error trying to complete the double play. Kristin Ormsby made the run earned as she smacked a homer to left field and drawing Mary within one at 4-3. Concordia got the lead off runner on but a double play quickly emptied the bases. Two straight walks drawn by Kappes and Anderson brought Meiser to the plate with two down but a strikeout ended the threat.

With one out in the top of the seventh Mary got back to back singles to put runners on first and second with Kappes still in the circle for CU. Kappes pitched herself to victory as she got a pop up and ground out to short to end the game.
