Huskies Win a Pair Over Concordia

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears (16-9, 0-2 NSIC) fell twice on Saturday as St. Cloud State (16-12, 2-0 NSIC) came in to Carlander Field and found a way to win. Concordia's comeback fell short and game one and two three run innings in game two were the Golden Bears undoing in game two. GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

GAME 1

St. Cloud State took advantage of a two out error picking up three runs in the top of the first. The Huskies scored the first run of the game on a base loaded walk and then a errant throw on a grounder back to the CU starter Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) allowed the next two runs to score. The Huskies picked another run in the top of the second with a lead off homerun.

Concordia would get back a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second. Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) started the inning of with a single and then after two straight outs Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) singled to third and then Katie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn.) singled home M. Feuerbach. Brynn Larsen also delivered with two outs singling home Meiser to make it 4-2.

The game would settle down for the next three innings as both pitchers threw up zeros in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Kluever would again post a zero in the sixth, she did not allow a hit after giving up four in the first two innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning Cassie Bertlesen (Oakdale, Minn.) led off with her first career homerun putting CU within one but Concordia would leave a runner on second as the game went to the seventh.

Kluever again shut down SCSU but Concordia went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the rally would come up just short as they fell 4-3.

GAME 2

Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) got the start in game two and was on fire in the early going putting SCSU down in order in the first two innings. The Golden Bears picked up a run in the bottom of the first thanks to a lead off double by Anderson, the sun got in the center fielder's eyes and a fell in center field. Anderson scored on a wild pitch to put CU up 1-0.

The Huskies threatened in the third but Kappes pitched out of a bases loaded jam, as SCSU had their first three runners reach base. Kappes got a shallow fly out to Meiser in left and then got a strikeout and hard hit fly to Erin Tjornhom (Eagan, Minn.) in right.

It was quiet again until the Huskies came to bat in the top of the fifth, SCSU got a lead off homer to tie the game. The then had a two out rally with a single and homerun to put themselves up 3-1 headed to the bottom of the fifth. M. Feuerbach got one back as she led of the CU half of the fifth with a homerun. St. Cloud State responded well as they added three more in the sixth as they got three two out hits in the inning.

The Golden Bears threatened in the sixth with a one out walk but that rally ended and they were sent down in order in the seventh as the Huskies picked up the 6-2 win over Concordia.

Concordia is back in action Wednesday as they travel to take on Upper Iowa in a double header. They will be back at Carlander Field on Saturday and Sunday as they take on Northern State and the University of Mary.
