MARY ELIMINATES CU'S POSTSEASON HOPES

BISMARK, N. D. - The Golden Bears (10-16, 7-13 NSIC) lost 81-52 on Friday night to Mary (16-8, 13-7 NSIC) and with the loss Concordia is now officially eliminated from post season play. Concordia tied a school record with 38 free throw attempts in the loss, 20 in the first half alone. Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) had 17 points and nine rebounds. BOX SCORE

WhitingConcordia shot just 27.3% in the game, going just 2-13 from behind the arc. From the line they were 26-38, 68.4% on the night. Mary was able to dominate in the paint outscoring CU 36-14 in that category as well as outscoring CU 19-9 in points off turnovers. The Golden Bears had 21 turnovers on the night which helped Mary run away in the end.

In the first half Mary raced out to a 14-4 lead in the first four and half minutes of the game. Concordia went scoreless from the 17:58 mark to the 13:55 mark. The Golden Bears closed the gap to just four with 11:42 left going on a 8-2 run. The Marauders responded by going on a run of their own scoring 10 straight, they kept pushing and got their first half lead as high as 21 with 5-14 left as the overall run was 20-3 over seven minute span. The lead shrunk to 14 with 1:07 left in the half and that is where it stayed as the two teams went to the locker room.

Mary outscored Concordia 16-6 in the paint in the first half and was able to hold CU to just 6-22 from the field. Concordia was 1-8 from downtown and Mary was 5-13 in the first half. 

As the second half began Concordia closed the gap to just 10 with 16:50 left as Anika Whiting hit a three pointer. Mary would not let Concordia get any closer as they would start to pull away for good at the 12:58 mark of the second half. With the score 56-43 Mary finished the game on a 25-9 run taking the contest by the final score of 81-52. It was the worst defeat for Concordia on the season as they were eliminated from post season play with the loss. Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) set a career high with 10 rebounds on the night, she also had eight points to go along with it. Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) had 11 points on the night, she was the only other player with more than five points for CU on the night.

Tomorrow CU will take on Northern State who picked up a big win over St. Cloud State on Friday night keeping their post season hopes alive.
