VanPelt spurs double overtime win over UW-River Falls

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul sophomore Terez VanPelt (Osseo, Minn.) scored 39 points and dished out seven assists to help the Golden Bears to a 109-101 double overtime win over Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday night at Gangelhoff Center.

VanPelt made 12-of-23 from the floor and 14-of-17 at the foul line and added five rebounds with a pair of steals while playing a game-high 45 minutes.

The Golden Bears trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half with 7:17 to play before a 15-3 run over a four minute period tied the game at 76-all. The run started with VanPelt making his only three-pointer of the night as he scored eight points during the run with DJ Lewis (New Orleans, La.) adding five more.

The Falcons pulled back up, 84-81 after a pair of former Golden Bear David Stanley free throws with 45 seconds left.  VanPelt scored five points in the final 36 seconds, however, to knot the game up including a three-point play with 11-seconds to go that tied the game and sent it to overtime.

In the first overtime, Concordia scored the first four points but the margin would never be that high again and UWRF's Ben Gessmer tipped home the tying bucket with five seconds to play to tie it back up at 96.

In the second overtime, VanPelt hit a jumper to give Concordia the early lead before UWRF answered with a three-pointer to take the lead. After the teams traded baskets with the score tied at 101 with just over two minutes left, Concordia scored the last eight points - five by VanPelt with a three-pointer by Isaiah Thomas (Fridley, Minn.).

Cole Olstad (Elgin, Minn.) contributed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Thomas had 17 points and nine rebounds. Nick Mabbutt (Milton Keynes, UK) had 10 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots before fouling out in 25 minutes of play.

Six players scored in double-figures and two more scored nine points for the Falcons led by Ollie White's double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Stanley had three points, five rebounds and five assists with three blocked shots.

Concordia shot 48.1% from the field, but were 9-of-25 (36.0%) from long range and 22-of-33 (66.7%) from the striple. Aside from VanPelt, Concordia shot just 8-of-16 at at the free throw line.

Concordia's exhibition schedule is complete, and the team will tip-off their regular season next Saturday, November 17 with a 2 p.m. scheduled start time against Clarke College at Gangelhoff Center.
