FAYETTE, Iowa – The second-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team increased its winning streak to 12 straight Saturday, shutting out Upper Iowa by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-8. The Golden Bears improve to 22-3 overall and 16-2 in the NSIC heading into their toughest week to date. On Tuesday, CU will host No. 5 Minnesota Duluth and then travel to No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.
In the victory over Upper Iowa, the Golden Bears were once again stellar on offense. They posted their second best attack percentage of the season at .457 (56-8-105). CU also tallied a season-high 54 assists in a three-set match as
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn.) totaled 48, which is also her highest mark in a three-set match.
Ellie Duffy (Fridley, Minn.),
Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn.) and
Cassie Haag (Plymouth, Minn.) all recorded double digit kills and attack percentages of over .400. Duffy posted the first 20-kill performance of the season by a Golden Bear and hit at a .447 clip, Koenecke went 12-for-18 on the attack (.611) with on error, while Haag totaled 11 kills on 22 attempts for a .409 rate (two errors).
Ashley Murtha (Apple Valley, Minn.) paced the squad defensively with 17 digs and
Taylor Dordan (Blaine, Minn.) also reached double figure digs at 11.
The Peacocks kept the first set tight and trailed by two points at 15-13, but a seven-point scoring spree by the Bears resulted in a 25-15 victory.
The second set was also close early at 6-6, but once again CU rallied for an eight-point run to lead 14-6 and eventually won 25-16.
Concordia displayed pure dominance in the final set by putting together scoring sprees of five twice and six once, while not allowing the Peacocks to score consecutive points more than once throughout the entire set for a 25-8 decision.
Tuesday's match against the fifth-ranked Bulldogs, touted as “
Roast the Dogs, Part VIII,” begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center. The Bears have not dropped a single set at home this season in 13 matches.
