Women's hoops downs Nebraska Kearney 71-51 to cap Thanksgiving Classic

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University women's basketball team won its second game of the Radisson Roseville Thanksgiving Classic, 71-51, over Nebraska Kearney on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center. The Golden Bears improve to 2-2, while the Lopers fall to 2-4.

Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) and Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) were named to the five-member All-Tournament Team. Whiting led the Bears with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. She also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds. Hansen was the only other player to reach double digit points with 12. She shot 2-for-7 from the floor, 7-for-8 from the free throw line and led the team with nine assists and three steals. She also grabbed five boards.

The first half started off with two scoring ties and one lead change in the first five minutes, leading to a 7-4 Concordia lead after a Jasmine Haynes (Robbinsdale, Minn.) three-pointer. The Golden Bears held onto their lead the rest of the way and slowly added to it.

Haynes gave the Bears a double digit lead – 20-9 – at the 8:39 mark, which they sustained for the remainder of the half. The Lopers cut the deficit to 12 points at 29-17 with 1:59 left of the clock, but CU finished the period with seven unanswered points and went into the break with a 36-17 advantage.

Whiting scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half, shooting 7-for-9 from the field. Collectively, CU shot 46.2% (12-26) and missed only one of 11 free throws. Nebraska Kearney was held to 28.0% shooting (7-25) in the first 20 minutes.

Concordia continued to add to its lead in the second half, gaining its largest lead of the game at 54-26 with 12:00 remaining. The closest the Lopers would get from that point on was a 19-point deficit (65-46) at the 3:11 mark, but the Bears closed out the game for a 20-point margin of victory.

The Navy and Gold shot 21-for-48 from the field (43.8%), while the Lopers were held to 31.7% (19-60). Nebraska Kearney convincingly won the rebound battle, 45-29, but was deflated by turnovers as it committed 27 leading to 23 points off the takeaway for the Bears.

Whiting is off to fast to start for CU. After the first four games of the season, the sophomore forward leads the team averaging 17.3 points per game, 61.4% shooting for the field and 8.0 rebounds.

Joining Whiting and Hansen on the All-Tournament Team are Northern State's Rachel Krogman (Most Outstanding Player) and Alison Kusler, along with William Penn's Orielle Thomas.

Concordia now enters NSIC regular season play on December 1 at Minnesota State. The Bears and Mavericks will tip off at the Taylor Center at 2:00 p.m.
