INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced the pairings for the Central Region Volleyball Tournament on Sunday night and Concordia-St. Paul was named the No. 1 seed and tournament host. The Golden Bears enter the tournament with a 27-4 record and will face No. 8 Wayne State (22-9) on November 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center.
The Golden Bears have won five consecutive NCAA Championships, and will be hosting the regional for the first time since the 2009 season. Concordia served as regional host all but one year from 2003 to 2009, the exception in its first national championship campaign of 2007. Concordia has captured the regional title in seven of the past nine seasons - all under head coach
Brady Starkey.
Concordia carries a 30-match winning streak in NCAA Tournament play dating back to 2006 in the regional final. The Golden Bears have reached the regional final (Sweet Sixteen) in nine consecutive seasons.
Other matchups in the Central Region include:
5 p.m. - #4 Central Missouri (26-6) vs. #5 Minnesota Duluth (28-4)
2:30 p.m. - #2 Southwest Minnesota State (29-2) vs. #7 Truman (27-6)
12 p.m. - #3 Nebraska-Kearney (33-2) vs. #6 Washburn (31-3)
The tournament will run on consecutive days from November 29-December 1.
Regional competition will be single-elimination, best-of-five sets matches and will not include a third-place match. The winners of each of the eight regionals will advance to the championship finals, December 6-8. Competition at the final site will be single-elimination, best-of-five sets matches. The site of the finals will be on the campus of West Florida at the UWF Field House in Pensacola, Fla.
