Koenecke leads charge past Vikings

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The sixth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (12-3, 6-2 NSIC) was paced by Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn.) with 16 kills and a .538 attack percentage to accelerate the Golden Bears past visiting Augustana (11-6, 5-3 NSIC) on Friday evening at Gangelhoff Center in straight sets.

The Golden Bears took the match by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-16. Despite the straight set sweep, the match started tight with five ties and three lead changes in the opener and 12 ties and four lead changes in a second set with Augie hold a lead throughout much of the middle frame.

The Golden Bears hit .339 as a team, with five players reaching eight or more kills led by Koenecke's 16. They totalled 54 for the match, with their team hitting percentage increasing each set (.286, .341, .385).

But their defense kept the ball alive through numerous long points, with Concordia piling up 69 digs compared to just 43 for Augustana. Five Golden Bears topped double-digits in digs led by their setter, Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn.) with 15. Konetchy also served up 46 assists on Concordia's 54 kills.

Augustana didn't have a hitter reach double-figures in kills on the night although they spread their attack well with four players getting between seven and kills. Courtney Ysker led the team with nine kills and 13 digs.

The Golden Bear defense held Augie to .195 hitting for the evening.

Concordia now leads the all-time series 15-1 with 15-straight wins over the Vikings and are undefeated at home (9-0).

Entering the evening, they were ranked second in the country in kills/set (15.02), assists/set (14.14) and attack percentage (.313). They topped each of those marks considerably this evening (18.0, 17.3, .339).

Concordia, unbeaten at home in 2012 in eight matches, looks to carry the momentum tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. against #18 Wayne State on Homecoming 2012. Concordia has not dropped a set at Gangelhoff Center this year.
