WAYNE, Neb. – Junior outside hitter
Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn.) was lights out on the attack for the second-ranked Concordia University volleyball team on Friday night. Koenecke posted a .773 attack percentage with 17 kills on 21 attempts (no errors), leading the Golden Bears to a 3-0 shutout over No. 18 Wayne State, marking their ninth consecutive straight set victory.
Koenecke's attack rate is the fifth best recorded in CU history as she becomes the 14th member of its 1,000-kill club. With the win, Concordia improves to 19-3 overall and 13-2 in the NSIC.
Concordia tallied the first point of the match and never relinquished the lead in the opening set. There were three scoring ties in the first 16 points (8-8), but the Golden Bears went on an 11-to-5 run for a comfortable 19-13 lead. The Wildcats cut the deficit to 22-18, but CU wrapped up the set with a 25-20 decision.
The Golden Bears took control of the second set early with a 4-0 lead and didn't look back. They led by as much as six points twice (12-6, 17-11) before ending the set on a 6-to-3 run for a 25-18 victory.
Wayne State's first lead of the entire match came with the first point in the third set, but the Golden Bears quickly snatched it away with a 7-to-1 run. The Wildcats answered with three consecutive points, but another run, this time 9-to-2, gave the Bears a 16-7 advantage en route to a convincing 25-14 win.
Ellie Duffy (Fridley, Minn.) followed Koenecke with 12 kills and a .241 attack percentage, while
Cassie Haag (Plymouth, Minn.) went 10-for-24 on the attack (one error) for a .375 clip. Three Bears tallied double digit digs as
Kara Pioske (Waconia, Minn.) led the way with 12.
Taylor Dordan (Blaine, Minn.) and
Ashley Murtha (Apple Valley, Minn.) each had 10.
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn.) directed the squad to a .368 attack rate with 43 assists. Like Koenecke, Konetchy eclipsed a career milestone with her 4,000th career assist.
Concordia will travel to Augustana on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. match against the Vikings.
