Batzel's double-double not enough for cu

saint paul, minn. - jodi batzel (rochester, minn.) had a career night with 17 points and 15 rebounds on the evening but it was not enough as concordia (6-6, 3-3 nsic) fell to #9 wayne state (12-1, 6-1 nsic) 53-50 as the second half comeback fell short. anika whiting (ashland, wis.) led the golden bears in scoring with 21 points as she combined with batzel to score 38 of cu's 50 points on the night. box score | highlights

the golden bears did a great job shutting down the nsic player of the year and leading scorer ashley arlen who averages about 20 points, holding her to to just eight on the night. Batzel's 15 rebounds were a career high as she cleaned up the defensive glass grabbing 12 of her rebounds on the defensive side.

it was a low scoring first half as wayne state went in to the locker room with a 22-17 lead. The wildcats shot just 28.0% in the first half but held cu to 26.7% shooting and hit three, three pointers to grab the lead. Ashton yossi led wsc with eight points and whitney epp had three blocks in the first half. Whiting led cu in scoring the half with nine points, batzel had nine boards in the half.

the second half opened up with wsc starting to pull away, with 10:14 left on the clock the wildcats held a 14 point lead, 44-30. Concordia then started coming back going on a 13-2 run cutting the wsc lead to three with 3:37 left. There was very little scoring over the next two minutes but with 25 seconds left batzel hit a three from the top of the arc getting within three. Wayne state's ali schwartzwald missed a free throw with 16 seconds left. Concordia had a chance to tie the game in the with the final possession but rachel hansen (eagan, minn.) turned the ball over and wsc got the win.
