saint paul, minn. - the home match winning streak extended to 51 as #1 concordia swept #9 wayne state on saturday afternoon.
kayla koenecke led the offense with 14 kills and
megan carlson had another all around performance adding 13 kills and 20 digs. Setter
amanda konetchy had 46 assists in the match as cu hit .368 in the match. Middle hitters
cassie haag and
katie habeck each had eight kills.
box scorein the first set concordia used a .562 hitting percentage to take control. Cu jumped out to a 6-2 lead early, forcing a wayne state timeout. The to did not stop the momentum as cu extended their lead to 13-6 causing another timeout. In the first set megan carlson and kayla koenecke each had five kills on nine attempts.
ellie duffy and katie habeck each had three as well. Concordia did not have a hitting error in set one as they took the set 25-9. Carlson also lead the defense with five digs and a solo block. The golden bears held wsc to just .028 hitting, forcing seven errors. Concordia also converted 8-9 side out attempts in the first set win.
concordia jumped out early in set two as well claiming a 9-5 lead midway through the set. Wayne state got within three a couple times but errors from the serving line combined with cu continuing to take good swings could not stop the momentum. Wsc's offense was more potent and their defense did a better job slowing down the golden bears but cu held a 17-10 lead late in the set. A block by habeck and koenecke gave cu a lead of 22-13. Habeck put a stamp on the set two win with a thunderous kills to close out set two in favor of concordia, 25-14.
in the second set cu hit .429 and was 13-15 in side out chances. Koenecke again had 5 kills in the set as her match total went to 10. Carlson and habeck each added four kills of their own. The defense was lead by carlson in the second set as she had eight digs alone in the second set.
taylor fieldsted add four of her own as cu held the wildcats to .175 hitting forcing four errors.
wayne state was the aggressor in set three jumping out to a early 6-3 lead. Cu battled to get back in the set, but the wildcats were alive in set three and held a 13-7 lead midway through the set. Habeck had a solo block, added an assist on the next play with duffy and got a kill to bring cu within three. A kill by duffy on the next play forced a wsc timeout as they tried to cling to the lead they worked hard to build up. An attack error by wayne tied the set at 14 as the cu streak was at 7-1. The wildcats composed themselves long enough to score two straight a take a 16-14 lead.concordia tied it again 17 all in the closest set of the season thus far. The lead was at 22-20 late in the set as the golden bears looked to close out the set and match. Wsc clawed back to tied it at 22 but a kill and block by cu forced match points. A scrambled ensued in the deciding point before haag ended with a kill.
fieldsted finished the match with 13 digs and koenecke was behind her with 9.
cassie weaver came off the bench to add five digs as well.
next up for the golden bears will be #25 northern michigan as the wildwood lodge classic will come to a close this evening. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
