bemidji, minn. - after piling up 17 runs in seven innings in game one with a power surge, the concordia university offense experienced a power outage for the first nine innings of game two. But in the 10th inning, concordia (8-5, 2-2 nsic) scored four runs and held on for a 7-5 extra inning win over bemidji state (9-15, 3-7 nsic) at bsu baseball field. Concordia will look to win the season series tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for a noon start. game 2 box
bemidji state scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning off junior right hander chris peterson (st. Anthony, minn.) before he settled down.
peterson wouldn't be scored on the rest of his day, working 7.0 innings while allowing six hits and striking out six and throwing under 100 pitches.
the offense came around for him, too, scoring twice in the top of the third inning. The first run came across when junior third baseman bryan lippincott (des moines, iowa) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an rbi double to center. Two batters later, sophomore designated hitter logan bouts (hopkins, minn.) brought lippincott home with an rbi single to center to tie the game.
concordia went ahead in the fourth as senior catcher sam fagely (right, mahtomedi, minn.) led off with a double, his third of the doubleheader, and scored on an rbi single to the opposite field by freshman first baseman elliot powell (minnetonka, minn.).
peterson left the game leading 3-2 but in the bottom of the eighth inning, bsu's nick jelacie led off with a homer to tie the game off junior left hander ty hall (spring lake park, minn.). Hall retired the next three batters, one by strikeout to turn the game over to senior right hander nick anderson (plymouth, minn.) in the ninth.
anderson retired the beavers in order to send the game into extra frames and with a four run lead he held on. With runners on the corners and one out with the winning run at the plate, anderson struck out a pair of beavers back-to-back to close the door for the sweep.
concordia's offense was not pretty in the game as they left 15 runners on base including 10 in scoring position while also having a runner caught stealing on a double steal attempt at home early in the game.
but they executed in the 10th inning when it counted, using two sacrifice bunts (one reaching on error) and a bunt single with junior shortstop troy dubay (urbandale, iowa) bringing home two runs with a single. Lippincott added a double and scored in the inning, his ninth double of the year, second of the game and third of the day.
lippincott also secured his ninth multi-hit game of the year. Concordia's first five hitters all had two-hit games while ninth batter j.t. Schneider (so., 2b, oak creek, wis.) was 3-5 to lift his average to .365.
anderson got the win for his efforts, evening his record at 1-1.
concordia has now won two of three extra inning games this year and in games decided by two runs or less they improve to 5-2 on the year.
