Anderson plays stopper role for concordia in gutty 10-inning win

sioux falls, s.d. - after extending their season long losing streak to five games with a 9-3 loss in game one, concordia senior right hander nick anderson (plymouth, minn.) willed concordia (15-12, 9-9 nsic) to a 7-6 win in game two in 10 innings at ronken field over augustana (24-18, 16-10). Anderson pitched all 10 innings to improve to 4-1 while third baseman bryan lippincott (des moines, iowa) scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth and 10th innings while extending his hitting streak to 25 games. Concordia is now 4-1 in extra inning games on the season. game 1 box | game 2 box

game 2: cu 7, augustana 6 (10 innings)
anderson is now 4-0 with 3 saves over his last eight appearances and over the last three weeks in northern sun play, anderson is 3-0 with 3 saves in seven appearances. In back-to-back weeks, he's stepped up to fill the void of innings-eater and top stopper at the same time to save an otherwise depleted concordia pitching staff.

last thursday, he hurled a 9-inning complete game win at #12 winona state allowing one earned run in a 3-2 win.

today, against an offense perhaps even more potent and certainly among the most dynamic with their base running prowess - and again on the road, he went the distance again.

he allowed five earned runs while striking out nine. He was tagged for 13 hits and walked three but pitched out of trouble often, as he has done so often in his career at cu, stranding nine augustana base runners, seven of which were in scoring position with another gunned down trying to steal third.

lippincott, meanwhile, is staying ahead of los angeles dodger andre ethier, who recently set the record for longest hitting streak in april at 24 games. Lippincott is a game ahead of ethier, showing just how impressive his run has been at the plate. He had a pair of multi-hit games again today, going 4-8 with a pair of doubles to increase his league-leading and nationally third ranked average to .473.

he raced home for the game winning run in the top of the 10th inning of game two when senior right fielder sam fagely (mahtomedi, minn.) dropped down a game winning rbi bunt single. Fagely went 2-5 in the second game and 4-9 in the doubleheader.

redshirt freshman first baseman elliot powell (minnetonka, minn.) also hit safely in each game, getting an rbi double in the sixth inning to give concordia their first run. He extended his hitting streak to nine, going 4-9 in the doubleheader.

concordia didn't have much offense in the early goings as augustana ace tyson gau shut them down in order in each of the first four innings and they had just two hits off him through five while striking out six times. But they tagged him for five runs (three earned) in the sixth and seventh innings, knocking him from the game in the seventh before he recorded an out in a four run frame as they took a 5-3 lead.

anderson had allowed just three runs (two earned) through the first six innings before augustana came back for a three run seventh including a two-run go-ahead home run by game one starting pitcher, game two shortstop and number three hitter deryk marks.

lippincott led off the eighth with a double, moved up on a passed ball and scored on an error to tie the game off augustana closer bret severtson, one of the best closers in the nsic. He led off the 10th with a single off severtson, moving up two bases on an error and scoring on the s.fagely bunt.

severtson was hit with the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year.

anderson allowed a two out double in the ninth, stranding two runners in the inning, and worked around a leadoff double in the 10th for the win.

senior left fielder jon stockton (oakdale, minn.) continues his outstanding season with a 2-5 game in the second game and is hitting .385.

game 1: augustana 9, cu 3
similar to how they fared in the midweek last week at #12 winona state, it was an early big inning by augustana that did the golden bears in. The vikings scored eight runs in the second inning and added another in the third to build a 9-0 lead after three.

sophomore right handed starter zach goodwin (mahtomedi, minn.) remained in and settled into a groove after that, showing perseverance in his first career start on the mound. He worked scoreless first and fourth inning against one of the top offenses in the northern sun, but took the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.

he was relieved by freshman right handed t.j. Obermyer (sergeant bluff, iowa), who made his second appearance for concordia. Obermyer worked two perfect frames and struck out one to close out the vikings.

concordia rallied in the top of the fifth, though, building momentum for game two. Redshirt freshman first baseman elliot powell (minnetonka, minn.) smoked a two run double with two outs and lippincott followed suit by knocking in powell.

powell has been swinging a hot bat and as a result was rewarded by getting moved up into the second spot in concordia's lineup.

senior right fielder sam fagely (mahtomedi, minn.) also went 2-4 for concordia, getting moved back into the middle of the lineup. S.fagely had a 10 game hitting streak snapped in the wayne state series, but has since hit safely in four straight and 14 of the last 15.

augustana pitcher/dh deryk marks got the win, improving to 3-3 as he worked 5.0 innings and allowed three unearned runs.
