saint paul, minn. - concordia got a much need sweep of bemidji state as they improved to .500 in the nsic. cassye mcmahon and ashley kluever both had complete game wins. Freshman tessa ewert drove in three runs in the game one 5-1 win. Calli brennan played third for the first time in over a month getting two hits in game one. Brynn larsen went 4-4 with an inside the park homerun in game two as cu won 10-2. game 1 box | game 2 box
game 1
the beavers got a lead off single to start the first inning putting pressure on cassye mcmahon right away. A sac bunt moved the runner to third, but was stuck at second with two outs, following a foul out to calli brennan at third. A single to right with two outs followed as bsu tired scoring the runner from second. A perfect throw by right fielder erin tjornhom to missie feuerbach kept bemidji state off the board. Concordia went down in order in their half of the first.
mcmahon settled down in the second inning pitching a perfect half inning. M. Feuerbach reached after getting hit by pitch with one out but was stranded there. Bemidji state again went down in order in the top of the third.
the golden bears got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a few errors by the beavers. megan revoir led off the inning with a single advancing to second on a throwing error by the center fielder. Mcmahon sacrificed her to third on a bunt and reached on an error by the third baseman. A couple outs followed before brennan started the scoring with a single to left. Tjornhom reached on error as well to load the bases up. tessa ewert doubled down the left field line to clear the bases as cu scored four unearned runs in the inning.
bemidji state took advantage of back to back walks to start the fourth scoring a run on double to center field past a diving katie anderson. Mcmahon got a two out single to center in the bottom of the fourth but cu was unable to increase their lead.
bsu again got their first two batters of the inning on base in the fifth but a pop up to larsen at short and then she caught the runner off third for a double play to end the inning. Concordia tried to get the scoring going again in the fifth as they got a brennan single and tjornhom to right center with one out, but a strikeout and ground out to short stop ended the threat keeping the score a 4-1 in favor of the golden bears.
a leadoff double by bsu in the top of the sixth was wasted as they failed to convert with runners in scoring position once again. Concordia added an insurance run in the sixth when revoir double off the fence in dead center and scored on anderson's two out single center. Anderson stole second but was stranded their as larsen's line drive found the glove of a fast reacting saralampki.
mcmahon finished off the beavers in the top of the seventh allowing a hit but nothing more picking up the complete game win.
game 2
bemidji state got the leadoff runner on via a sharp single to left. A foul bunt strikeout and ground out to the pitcher put the runner at second with two down. ashley kluever got a swinging strikeout to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the first calli brennan just missed a two run homerun as her line drive to left center hit the very top of the fence and somehow bounced back into the field of play. The single scored larsen from first as cu took a 1-0 lead after one.
bsu got a one out single to right but she was stranded there after kluever picked up a strikeout and come backer to the mound. Cu's megan revoir walked with one out and advanced to second on sac bunt by stephanie schmikla. Anderson doubled to left center to score revoir. Larsen followed it up with a single to left scoring anderson, advancing to second on the throw home. Brennan hit another shot to left scoring larsen and putting cu up 4-0 after two.
kluever put the beavers down in order in the top of the third. Ewert started the inning with a single to left and then kluever got a one out single to keep the threat going. Both ewert and kluever moved up a base on a wild pitch with two outs but schmikla ended the inning with strikeout.
the beavers got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth stringing together three straight two out hits to score a pair of runs and cut the cu lead in half concordia answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Anderson and larsen singled to start the inning. A double steal put runners on second and third with one away. A wild pitch allowed anderson to score from the third and larsen moved up third. Tjornhom reached on a fielder's choice as the second baseman tried to get larsen out at home, but it didn't work. Ewert then smashed a homerun that landed out in the middle of marshall avenue to give cu a 8-2 lead after four complete.
kluever allowed a leadoff single to left but then got a double play to quickly clear the bases. Bsu got another single to left but a ground out to second ended the inning. Anderson got a one out single and then larsen finished the game with an inside the park homerun do the left field line, as the left fielder dove but couldn't come up with the catch as the ball rolled to the fence.
the golden bears will host their third consecutive home doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at noon as they play host minnesota duluth at carlander field.
