Brennans lead cu at day 1 of rebel spring games

orlando, fla. - the golden bears just keep winning as they won their sixth straight game, by winning their two contests on saturday in day one of the rebel spring games. The day stared with an upset of #24 lewis (ill.) 6-4 followed by a close 4-3 win over northwood (mich.) university. ashely kluever earned a win, pitching a total of seven innings on the day and calli brennan had six hits over two games for concordia. cu/lewis box | cu/northwood box

in the opening game kluever pitched a complete game, her second of the season as she allowed five runs, one earned. She allowed just five hits while striking out six in the game. Cu got homeruns by katie anderson, her first of the year, and sami mattson her fourth of the season.

concordia started the scoring in the bottom of the second as mattson homered scoring herself and brennan, who reached on a double. At the same time kluever was busy shutting lewis down allowing just one hit over the first three innings. Concordia busted the game open in the bottom of third as they scored three runs off five hits. Bekah roth started the inning with a double followed by an anderson homer. Brennan singled with one out and then mattson reached on fielder's choice. With two outs back to back singles by erin tjornhom and m. Feuerbach scored mattson from third for cu's third run of the inning.

in the top of the fourth lewis responded by scoring three runs of their own. Lewis' second batter of the inning reached on an error as did their third batter of the inning. A strikeout by schmikla gave lewis two out but the danger wasn't over as lewis hit a three run bomb to bring them within two. Cu did not score in the bottom of the fourth and lewis got within one by a run in the top of the fifth. Erin tjornhom homered in the bottom of the fifth to give cu the 6-4 lead and secure the win.

in game two cassye mcmahon got the start in the circle for cu as she pitched 4.1 innings allowing one run and striking out two. Mcmahon did walk seven in the game as stephanie schmikla relieved her pitching three innings to get the win. Ashley kluever pitched the final two thirds of an inning to get the save. Mattson had another homerun in the game for concordia.

neither team scored in the first inning but cu struck with two runs in the top of the second. Mattson led off the inning with a homer. The feuerbach sisters had back to back singles to put runners on first and second with one out. After tessa ewert flied out, roth singled scoring m. Feuerbach.

the game remained 2-0 in favor of cu until the bottom of fifth. It was then when northwood scored a run thanks to a throwing error by cu. Northwood came to bat down one in the bottom of seventh and after a strikeout, they got a double to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Schmikla got a ground out to first for the second out but nu got a single and tied the game.

concordia responded in extra innings, cu started the inning with a runner on second because of tournament rules. M. Feuerbach singled to put runners on first and third with one out. M. Feuerbach walked and tessa ewert singled to score tjornhom. Roth doubled following a passed ball to score k. Feuerbach. Anderson flied out to end the inning give cu a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of eight. Nu started with a runner on second much like cu. Their first batter, comer doubled scoring the runner from second. Comer was then picked off second for the first out. Following a walk, kluever came in to relieve schmikla. Kluever got back to back fly outs to end the game and save the win for concordia.

the golden bears will be back in action tomorrow morning against ashland (ohio) at 10:00 a.m. And california (pa.) at 2:00 p.m.
