sioux falls, s.d. - the #4 golden bears (23-1, 14-1 nsic) were tested on the road tuesday night as the augustana vikings pushed cu all evening. Concordia took the match 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22) behind
megan carlson's (andover, minn.) career high 21 kills and 23 digs. On the evening carlson joined jessica lucia (2003-2006) and mandy horazdovsky (2000-03) as the only three players in school history to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.
box scorekayla koenecke (delano, minn.) had 18 kills and 11 digs while hitting .325 on the night.
ellie duffy (fridley, minn.) had a nice night adding 13 kills and six digs.
amanda konetchy (victoria, minn.) had 52 assists in the match and
taylor fieldsted (lakeville, minn.) had 18 digs.
concordia was dominate in set one hitting .487 with just one error however the vikings stayed in the match, holding an 8-7 lead. With the match tied at nine, cu got some breathing room to take a 14-11 lead. It was still a three point advantage at 17-14 when concordia went on a roll to take a 21-15 on the way to a 25-17 set win.
in the second set augustana jumped out to a 7-3 lead before cu took their first lead at 9-8. It was a back and forth battle that saw au take a commanding lead at 23-17 late in the set. Concordia got within four before falling 25-20.
the golden bears came to play in set three jumping out 12-6 on the vikings. Midway through the set cu held at 19-12 lead before claiming the set 25-18.
it looked like the fourth set would be a comfortable win as concordia led most of the set. Augustana scored the first four points of the set to force a cu timeout. The golden bears forced au to use a timeout after cu held a 15-11 lead. Augustana used their second timeout of the set down 19-14 and it worked as they got within three at 21-18 forcing cu to call a timeout. It did not stop the momentum as the vikings got within one at 23-22. A service error by au and kill by carlson gave the match to cu.
this weekend concordia hosts #14 wayne state and augustana on friday and saturday at the gangelhoff center.
