saint paul, minn. - the golden bears (4-8, 3-5 nsic) offense awoke on saturday afternoon in the gangelhoff center as they blew past nsic rival winona state (10-2, 6-2 nsic) 73-51. Cu shot 54.7% from the field in the game, their highest mark this season and hit 12-24 three-pointers to get their biggest win of the season. Cu was led all game by their seniors, who scored 50 of the team's 73 points, including 25 from jineen williams (racine, wis.) and 18 from maurika hickman (minneapolis, minn.). box score
jineen williams finished the night 11-19 shooting and 3-6 from behind the arc. She also added eight rebounds which was tops by any cu player. Hickman was 7-12 from the field and connected on 3-6 three-pointers. She tied many poke (richfield, minn.) and erica gress (apple valley, minn.) for second on the team with five rebounds. As a team cu made 29 field goals, their most in any game so far this season. Williams also added four assists and three steals as well.
concordia outscored the warriors 32-20 in the paint as they flexed their muscles down low. Cu out-rebounded wsu 38-29 and scored 13 points off 15 warrior turnovers. Cu led by as much as 29 late in the second half in their best game of the season thus far. Eight golden bears scored on the night including the first points for shandrell duncan (new orleans, la.) since re-joining the team in early january. carissa wolyniec (minneapolis, minn.) tied her career high with eight points off the bench, which led all reserve players in the game. Wolyniec finished 3-4 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc.
williams, hickman and zoraa quoie (boston, mass.) led the golden bears in the first half as they combined for 34 of the 40 points scored by cu in the opening 20 minutes. Poke added four and rachel hansen (eagan, minn.) had the other two. Concordia shot 58.6% from the field in the first half to claim a 14 point led going into the break.
the golden bears jumped out to an early 16-4 lead in the game thanks to hitting eight of their first ten shots from the field. Hickman and quoie combined for 10 of the point during the run which spanned the first 6:04 of the game. Winona state got within six at 18-12 but it was the closest they got for the rest of the game. The golden bears used a 18-8 run through the middle of the first half to extend their lead to 36-20, the largest of the first half. Cu outscored wsu 20-6 in the paint in the first half and outscored the warriors 8-0 in points off turnovers.
in the second half concordia kept up the pressure on and took a 47-33 lead and turned into a 71-42 lead with 4:34 left in the game. It was cu's largest lead of the game as the golden bears went on 24-9 run capped off by a wolyniec three pointer. Williams hit a jumper following a winona state basket at the 3:47 mark, it was the last point cu would score in the game as wsu finished the game on a 7-0 run. Cu finished the game 10-20 from behind the arc where as wsu finished the season 3-14 from behind the arc.
concordia will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against upper iowa at 2 p.m. In the gangelhoff. Upper iowa fell to saint cloud state 100-59 on saturday afternoon.
