Golden bears take big bite out of bulldogs

sioux falls, s.d. - the concordia softball team defeated minnesota duluth 4-1 in continued action at the 2010 nsic tournament. The golden bears, improving to 34-14 overall, are matched up with augustana college in a game that will start around 1:30 pm at sherman park. early scoring got the golden bears rolling out to a 3-0 lead over the bulldogs. The first run was worked out by anna bjorlin, who reached on a single and forced a throwing error on a stolen base and made her way to third. calli brennan bunted a beauty to the pitcher, reaching safely and also scoring bjorlin on the play. Another bulldog error and continued aggressive base running by the nsic's stealing leaders got runners into position to do more damage in the second inning. nikki scherr and katie anderson both singled to drive in runs to give concordia a 3-0 lead. jamie lindboe gave concordia a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field.

ashley kluever was given the nod for her fourth straight start of the tournament. Giving up only six hits and a single earned run, kluever threw her third consecutive complete game and improves to 15-5 on her rookie year. She successfully navigated her way through five scoreless innings, stranding umd runners in three of the first five, before the bulldogs finally scored a run in the sixth. Kluever struck out three batters and drew 11 fly outs.

concordia continued to spread their hits around the lineup. Seven different players put out a hit each to give cu a 7-6 advantage in overall hits. Minnesota duluth's first through third batters were responsible for four of the team's six knocks. The bulldogs committed two errors in the meeting, both of which hurt them in the long run.

concordia is matched up with tournament host augustana college in their next game of the tournament, which will start around 1:30 pm. Wayne state is the other team remaining alive in the tournament.
