st. Paul, minn. - junior right handed pitcher nick anderson (plymouth, minn.) had a tremendous weekend for concordia on the mound. Today, he saved the first game of the doubleheader by working two perfect innings in a 6-3 win before pitching a complete game in a 9-1 win over minnesota crookston. With today's doubleheader sweep, concordia (18-22, 10-9 nsic) completed a four game sweep of minnesota crookston (3-36, 0-24 nsic) and has now won eight of their last nine games. Sophomore second baseman j.t. Schneider (oak creek, wis.) had two hits in each game to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. game 1 box | game 2 box
in the four game series, anderson pitched 10.2 innings with a 0.84 earned run average, going 1-0 with two saves. He struck out 10 batters and held the golden eagles to a .211 average. He has now appeared in 21 games on the hill for cu, making four starts. He now has six career saves, ranking second on the career record list while his five saves in 2010 are tied for the single season record. The win in game two was his 14th career victory, putting him in an eight place tie all-time while his 43 career appearances are the fourth most. He is now 5-5 on the season with five saves in 65.1 innings pitched.

concordia scored in three consecutive innings early to take a 4-0 lead after four. Sophomore right hander ben lemke (rosemount, minn.) was solid early, scattering a single in the second and hitting a batter in the fourth for the only two baserunners as cu mounted the early lead. He pitched 1-2-3 innings in the first and third and concordia caught a runner stealing in the fourth to set umc down in order.
in the fifth, the golden eagles played small ball, getting a leadoff single to start the inning before a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. A single gave them runners on the corners when casey woodside lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score their first run.
lemke pitched out of trouble, leaving a runner on second in the inning, getting erik nockleby looking to end the inning.
in the sixth, lemke allowed a pair of runs but forced umc to leave the bases loaded when he struck out woodside swinging to end the threat with concordia clinging to a 4-3 lead.
in the seventh, cu turned to sophomore lefty ty hall (spring lake park, minn.) out of the bullpen. Hall got in trouble but pitched out of a jam, inducing a double play to shorstop bryan lippincott (so., des moines, iowa) to end the inning with the tying run on third.
in the bottom of the inning, freshman hogan jackson (oakdale, minn.) drove home a run with an rbi single through the left side to give the golden bears a two run cushion heading into the eighth.
that's when concordia turned to their durable closer anderson, who worked 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to put down the golden eagle threat. Junior jon stockton (oakdale, minn.) added an insurance run for anderson in the bottom of the eighth when he crushed a solo homer to right center into the gangelhoff center parking lot. It was stockton's third homer of the season after going 230-plus at bats to start his career without a home run.
five different players produced two-hit performances in the starting lineup. Stockton was the big producer with a pair of extra base hits and a walk in four plate appearances. He went 2-3 in the first game and is now hitting .333 on the season.
junior sam fagely (mahtomedi, minn.) drove in a pair of runs, going 2-4 while senior brenden furrow (johnston, iowa) also drove in a pair including his 10th double.
lemke went six innings allowing three earned runs in his fourth quality start of the year to tie a club-high. He struck out eight and didn't issue any walks while improving to 3-4.
the golden eagles were led by josh kraby's 3-4 performance but no one was able to mutser an extra base hit as they were limited to eight team hits - all singles, and did not draw any walks by concordia's three pitchers.
jordan triestram worked seven innings for umc, allowing six earned runs while nick zawacki worked a scoreless inning in his 20th appearance of the season.
game 2: cu 9, minnesota crookston 1
the golden bears extended their winning streak against minnesota crookston to 27 games with the eight run victory. Anderson went the distance for the third time this since while making just his fourth start. He scattered seven hits with two going for extra bases - both doubles. He struck out five and walked two while forcing umc to leave six on base - all in scoring position. He threw 99 pitches while lowering his season era to 4.55.
concordia scored one in the first inning while lippincott leading off with a single up the middle. He swiped second base for his team leading 13th steal and scored on a furrow double to the left center gap.
but the score remained 1-0 after three innings. Concordia's offense all weekend was victimized by excellent plays in the field by the minnesota crookston defense. Numerous line drives were snared by the infielders while centerfielder nockleby showed tremendous range, stealing a few extra base hits from the cu bats.
in the fourth inning, concordia notched three runs in unconventional fashion, getting hit by pitch three times in the inning while a suicide squeeze by s.fagely was executed to score junior blake devries (eden prairie, minn.) from third base. Sophomore troy dubay (urbandale, iowa) hit a double to the right centerfield warning track, scoring stockton from first. On the play, umc threw the ball away trying to get stockton and dubay came all the way around to score as the ball went out of play with dubay nearing third base.
umc scored a run in the fifth but anderson pitched out of a jam to leave runners on 2nd and 3rd.
concordia scored five more in the sixth inning highlighted by a two-run double by dubay who is second on the team with 11 doubles, tied with furrow. Dubay went 6-11 in the series with four doubles.
dubay, schneider and furrow all had two hit performances while s.fagely was again solid at the plate, going 1-1 with a walk and an rbi sacrifice bunt.
umc was led by leadoff hitter david lovly, who went 3-4 with an rbi and a pair of steals to give him 12 sb's on the season. He hit safely in all four games, going 9-14 in the series to raise his average to a team-high .330. Adam lee went 2-3 as the two players accounted for five of umc's seven hits.
steve schroer took the loss, pitching a complete game allowing eight earned runs (nine total) on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked four.
in the four game series, the golden bears hit .449 as a team with 15 doubles, two triples and six home runs, slugging .740 as a team.
concordia is now in the race for an nsic tournament spot with a 10-9 record. They are currently tied with augustana for seventh but augie leads st. Cloud state 7-5 in the fifth inning at the time of this article. They trail minnesota duluth (12-8) by a 1.5 games for sixth place.
concordia travels to take on #27 minnesota state on wednesday in mankato for a 9/7 doubleheader. The mavericks are 16-4 and in second in the northern sun with a 27-9 overall record.
