Win streak bumped to nine games for cu softball

st. Paul, minn. - a wonderful spring day set the tone for the concordia softball program (24-8, 12-2 nsic) on saturday. Following a dedication ceremony for the team's new carlander field, the golden bears downed st. Cloud state (19-17, 6-8 nsic) by scores of 10-1 (5 inn.) and 6-1 and increased their winning streak to nine games. The squad racked up 22 hits while allowing only two earned runs on the day with senior anna bjorlin racking up four rbi in the wins. Concordia is on the road at upper iowa on wednesday before turning back around with home games next weekend. game 1 box - game 2 box

anna bjorlin put four more hits on her career total on saturday against the huskies, including a home run jacked to center field. The senior infielder now has 225 hits in her career and is just four knocks away from cu's all-time record. Her game 1 home run was accompanied by a double, one of eight for concordia on the day.

the golden bears pegged away at st. Cloud state's pitching and defense. The scsu battalion gave up 12 earned runs in the doubleheader, while the husky defense failed to help out the staff and committed six errors. Concordia's offense started the day by batting around the order in their first inning of at-bats, marking stolen bases and three doubles in the inning. tiff rodd collected two quick rbi with a double to left field and concordia led 5-0 early on.

the day never got better for the huskies. Entering the day as the nsic's premier base-stealing team, they were rarely given a chance to advance bases with fine pitching performances from cu's ashley kluever and stephanie schmikla allowing a minimum number of base runners. The huskies got one run in each of the day's games, a generated first game score and a home run in game two. Kluever and schmikla combined to give up only 10 hits and both gained complete game wins.

every concordia batsman reached base at one point or another during the doubleheader and eight of the team's nine starters notched hits. Catcher nikki scherr had a team high .800 average with a 4-of-5 day at the plate, while the lineups first two batters, bjorlin and katie anderson both went 4-of-6 with three runs scored. Anderson also had two stolen bases.

concordia built up enough runs in the early innings of game one to invoke the mercy rule and take the 10-1 win in five innings. Bjorlin and jamie lindboe each had two rbi for the golden bears. A four-run fourth inning was cu's highlight of game two, the team again batting around the order and building up a 6-0 lead. St. Cloud state's biggest hit was too little and too late to make a difference, the 7th inning homer only saving the squad from a shutout.

hits from senior abby brundidge moved her current hitting streak to 12 games, a season high for a concordia batter.
