st. Paul, minn. - it was a closely contested grind of attrition on saturday afternoon at sea foam stadium, but bemidji state (7-1-0, 4-1-0 nsic) capitilazed on their scoring opportunity in a 1-0 shutout win over homecoming host concordia university (4-4-1, 3-2-0 nsic). box score
it was a pivotal game early in the northern sun's conference season and the beavers were able to pick up three points as they sit tied atop the nsic standings with concordia's opponent tomorrow, minnesota duluth. With bemidji state heading to st. Cloud state tomorrow and minnesota duluth coming to st. Paul, the golden bears could conceivably leave the weekend in a four way tie with the three other aforementioned teams.
however, umd will be no slouch, as the golden bears have never defeated the bulldogs in the history of cu soccer.
in today's game, concordia had a tremendous scoring opportunity with just over 15 minutes to play when chloe moore (fr., lakeville, minn.) launched a throw-in near the corner to the center of the box. After it played off a concordia head, freshman brittany kapala (fridley, minn.) turned and swiped a shot at bsu keeper samantha ross. But ross reacted quickly and kapala didn't quite get enough on the ball.
while the beavers were credited with seven shots on goal, only one got past cu keeper megan kurtz (jr., waunakee, wis.) who played well in the net. And despite the statistical shot advantage, that didn't tell the full story of how evenly today's match was played between solid nsic teams.
bemidji's lone goal came in the 63rd minute of play, bethany fluto's second goal of the season.
concordia and umd square off tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. At sea foam stadium.
