Concordia takes tournament title, Mcnamara named MVP

denver, colo. - the concordia university volleyball team won the 2009 colorado premier tournament, knocking off #12 central missouri (6-2) for the second straight week. Concordia has now won 45 consecutive matches and is 8-0 on the season. They play their home opener next weekend, hosting the radisson-roseville classic at the gangelhoff center. maggie mcnamara was named mvp of the prestigous tournament, joining emily palkert, megan carlson and mary slinger on the all-tournament team. box score

the golden bears used a .342 hitting average, just shades off of a season high mark, en route to their win over central missouri. When the teams met last weekend, the jennies managed to take one set from cu, but this time around, the closest they would get was a 28-26 second set score.

sadie kessler and megan carlson put down 13 and 12 kills each for their team. Kessler hit a staggering .458 on the night with only two errors at the net. Carlson had a season high 19 digs to make it six out of the season's eight matches with a double-double. She has finished in double figures for kills in every match of the season.

the second set duel finished with a score of 28-26 with the point spread never going further than three points. Kessler accounted for eight of the team's 22 kills in the set. She did not commit an error. Carlson picked up the concordia defense and reeled in 11 of her night's digs during the important set.

also pitching in on the golden bear defensive effort was mary slinger with 18 digs. maggie mcnamara had 51 assists, six digs and two blocks.

the jennies only had one player finish the match in double figures for kills, with abby gruenbacher putting down 11 with only one attacking error. Central missouri fell short in digs, 40 to cu's 57.

the golden bears open play next weekend with a 2:30 pm non-conference meeting with bemidji state. They then play the primetime match against dowling college starting at 7:30.
