Golden bears hold on for series sweep

crookston, minn. - concordia university (30-11, 11-8 nsic) tied their single season wins record as they swept the univeristy of minnesota, crookston (5-33, 3-21 nsic) with a 3-2 win in game one before a 10-7 game two victory at umc baseball field on sunday afternoon. Another record fell today as sophomore jon stockton (oakdale, minn.) drew a season record tying walk in game one before drawing two more in the second game. Senior zane froehlich (sioux falls, s.d.) saw his hit streak end at 10 in game one but went 2-5 with a grand slam and six rbi in game two. game 1 box - game 2 box

the 2009 golden bears reached 30 wins for just the second time in school history, and did it in 41 games. The 2007 team finished the season with a 30-13 record, getting to 30 at the same point in the season, 41 games, as they lost their final two of the year. This year's golden bears still have 12 regular season games to play plus any nsic and/or ncaa tournament games, should they qualify for postseason play.

game 1: cu 3, minnesota, crookston 2
senior right handed pitcher aaron pfalzgraff (garland, texas) out-dueled umc ace paul krebs, throwing a complete game to improve to 5-1 on the season. The team leader in k/bb ratio struck out seven without issuing any walks while scattering seven umc hits.

krebs went six innings, three hitting the golden bears but walking five. He struck out eight and falls to 2-5 on the season.

the game was scoreless through three innings with concordia leaving a runner on second in the first and a runner on third in the third. Umc didn't put a runner in scoring position early, getting a runner to first in the second and in the third.

concordia drew first blood in the fourth when froehlich drew a one out walk, stole second, his first of the year, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore sam fagely (mahtomedi, minn.) drew a two out walk to give the golden bears first and third when freshman troy dubay (urbandale, iowa) delivered a run scoring single moving fagely to third. Dubay and fagely successfully executed a double steal, fagely swiping home as dubay reached second safely.

fagely walked three times in his only three plate appearances of the game.

leading 2-0, pfalzgraff surrendered a one out double to casey woodside. With two outs, teddy gutman placed an rbi single up the middle to get umc on the board and back within a run.

in the top of the fifth, senior brenden furrow (johnston, iowa) crushed a solo homer to left for a 3-1 lead, a necessary insurance run as umc rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning.

from there, it was all pfalzgraff as he retired seven of the final eight batters.

game 2: cu 10, minnesota, crookston 7
stockton drew walks in each of his first two times to the plate in the first two innings to break mason reinhart's 2006 record of 36. Stockton now has 38 walks in 41 games in 2009.

those first two innings set the tone for the game.

concordia loaded the bases with no outs in the first when froehlich delivered a two run single to right center.

in the second, the golden bears loaded the bases again with a single and two walks with one out. Furrow and senior chris herbert (white bear lake, minn.) were each hit by pitch to score two more runs bringing up froehlich once again with the bases jammed.

umc went to the bullpen, ending lincoln messner's day after 1.1 innings. He walked four in the stint, but those were the only four walks of the second game for cu.

ben lazzari would be next to attempt to retire froehlich with the bases loaded.

froehlich doubled his rbi total from his first inning bases loaded at bat by smashing a grand slam to left. It was froehlich's fourth home run of the season and gave him six rbi in the first two innings in what was an 8-0 cu lead.

the lead would be big enough for sophomore nick anderson (plymouth, minn.) to pick up his fifth win, improving to 5-2, although he let in four runs in 4.1 innings on 10 hits. He had four strikeouts and no walks in the victory.

he was relieved by junior steven king (johnston, iowa), who came into the game with a 0.90 era in 10.0 innings. In the first 2.1 innings of his 2.2 innings, he was not scored upon.

but the golden eagles rallied in the seventh with two outs with a single, double and a three run home run to end king's scoreless inning streak at 10 innings.

king finished the game allowing three runs in 2.2 innings on four hits. Like anderson, king struck out four without a walk as cu had 15 strikeouts without issuing a single walk in the two games today spanning 14 innings.

lazzari pitched well other than the grand slam to froehlich, working 5.2 innings of three run ball.

umc's top four hitters in the order went 10-16 while the 4-5 batters, woodside and tyler reiner, each clubbed home runs. The 3-5 hitters combined for all seven rbi for the golden eagles.

this weekend was big for concordia, who hung on to sweep umc in a four game season series. Umc had already taken a game from both southwest minnesota state and st. Cloud state earlier in the season.

while cu was extending their season long winning streak to seven games, they also jumped up another notch in the nsic standings, moving a half game ahead of upper iowa (11-9) for sixth place. Southwest minnesota state and st. Cloud state are tied for fourth ahead of cu at 9-5.

this week, cu returns home to barnes field as they host minnesota state university, mankato on wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The mavericks were off this weekend and are 16-2 in league play. Msu has a tough schedule ahead with four games against cu (away/home the next two wednesday's) with four game weekend series at wayne state and st. Cloud state.

cu's final two weekend opponents are bemidji state on the road next weekend before closing out the season at home against winona state may 2-3.
