st. Cloud, minn. - it was another rallying effort for the golden bears (25-15, 7-3 nsic) in two huge conference wins at st. Cloud state (18-27, 5-7 nsic) saturday afternoon. Concordia came from behind to take both decisions, 3-1 and 3-2. Several cu athletes had multi-hit games, while the pitching staff kept the games tight to allow for the rallies.
katie anderson led the concordia offense with four hits in six at-bats, driving in half of the team's runs on the day. mollie lenzie had two hits in three credited at-bats, while tiff rodd went 3-for-5 at the plate and moved her current hitting streak to nine games, the longest active streak on the team and the second longest for cu this season. abby brundidge drilled out her season's third home run, an important hit that tied the first game up in the sixth inning.
stephanie schmikla gave up only one earned run in the opening game of the day, pitching three innings with batters retired in order. The huskies had runners at second and third with just one out in the first inning, but schmikla did not allow a ball out of the infield and kept the game scoreless. St. Cloud state had several threats throughout the game, but they only received an rbi single in the clutch, which put them up 1-0 in the fourth inning.
the golden bears really struggled offensively through the first four innings, putting only the first batter of the game in scoring position. The fifth inning saw things turn around as the bags went loaded following two singles and a batter hit by pitch. A strikeout and a pop-up ended the frame without a score, but set the team up for success in the sixth inning.
abby brundidge dealt the fatal blow in the game, bombing a two-run homer over the left field fence to put the golden bears up 2-0. The inning continued with four more hits and an rbi single from katie anderson that scored tiff rodd and gave cu their final score of 3-1. Scsu only put one batter on base in the final two innings and could not return the knocks seen by concordia.
rodd, anderson and mollie lenzi each put out two hits in the concordia effort. The team out-hit st. Cloud nine to eight. Schmikla is now 13-8 on the year.
in a game that was eerily similar to the second game played between the teams on friday, the golden bears gave up two single run innings to the huskies before mounting a late big inning for the 3-2 win. St. Cloud state saw one hit, a hit batter, a walk and a wild pitch lead to an early 1-0 in the first inning of the final regular season game played between scsu and cu. cassye mcmahon settled down after the first and sent down the next seven batters in order. The huskies put one more run on the board in the fifth inning, leading the frame off with a single and later scoring from a fielder's choice.
the golden bears answered the 2-0 deficit again in the sixth inning, starting the frame off with two singles. A sacrifice bunt from tiff rodd moved both abby brundidge and sami mattson into scoring position. katie anderson delivered a two-rbi single to knot the game up at 2-2. The game-winning hit came from an unlikely source, pitcher cassye mcmahon. Mcmahon earned the win both from in the circle and at the dish, putting a hit out into the field to drive in the go-ahead and final cu run, scoring anderson from second.
mcmahon improves to 10-6 on the season with the win. stephanie schmikla came in to close out the final two innings from the rubber, gaining her fourth save of the season. She and mcmahon only gave up a combined four hits to the huskies, while the cu offense came up with seven knocks, two from each mattson and anderson.
