game 1: cu 5, uw-superior 1
senior right hander chris kimpton (canberra, aus.) worked the first three innings, striking out four while allowing just two hits and a walk to earn the victory to improve to 3-2 on the season. The three shutout frames lower his era to 2.79. Senior right hander aaron pfalzgraff (garland, texas) pitched the final four innings to earn his first save of the season. Due to the innings being scripted prior to the game, kimpton is the pitcher of record despite not working four innings.
the golden bears scored their five runs using just three of their nine hits in the game. In the first inning, a two run triple by senior brenden furrow (johnston, iowa) plated the first two and freshman bryan lippincott (des moines, iowa) delivered furrow home with an rbi groundout.
in the sixth, freshman logan bouts (hopkins, minn.) laced a leadoff double to right center and senior jake schmidt (oakdale, minn.) loaded the bases later in the inning with a single to left. The next two batters, sophomore jon stockton (oakdale, minn.) and senior chris herbert (white bear lake, minn.) walked and were hit by pitch, respectively, to score cu's fourth and fifth runs.
in those two innings where concordia scored all of their runs, they had just those three hits, while doing damage with patience, drawing three walks and being hit by pitch twice.
furrow finished the first game 3-4 with two rbi while bouts and senior zane froehlich (sioux falls, s.d.) were each 2-4 at the dish and each hit their fourth double of the season.
blake danielson took the loss for uws pitching 5.1 innings allowing all five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six.
game 2: cu 7, uw-superior 1
freshman right hander ben lemke (rosemount, minn.) was solid in his return to the rubber, throwing his first career complete game scattering three hits and three walks. Usually a dominant-type strikeout pitcher, lemke went a different route against the yellowjackets, throwing just 72 pitches and striking out only one batter in the game. The approach worked as he lowered his era from 7.15 to 5.76 while improving to 3-1.
the yellowjackets struck first, scoring in the top of the second inning manufacturing a run with two outs.
but in the bottom of the inning, concordia struck back as froehlich and schmidt each delivered rbi singles to give cu a lead they would not relinquish.
bertrand made sure of that in the third inning when he clubbed a three run shot to right, a no-doubt line drive that smashed the up-right seats suspended behind the metrodome's famous "baggie." that shot capped a five run inning that started with a two run triple by lippincott.
from there, lemke took over and let his defense do the dirty work. He forced double plays in the first, fourth and seventh innings.
after the second, lemke threw 1-2-3 innings in three of the final five frames while only pitching to the minimum three batters in all five frames.
lippincott and bertrand each had 2-3 performances while froehlich was 2-2.
tim bouvine took the loss for uw-superior pitching 5.2 innings allowing all seven runs on nine hits. He struck out five and walked a pair.
note
senior zane froehlich had a 4-6 day at the plate, raising his average 30 points from .241 to .271
sophomore jon stockton drew three walks in the first game and has now walked 28 times, the fifth highest single season total in cu history
