Softball dominates nsic foes in non-conference action

st. Cloud, minn. - concordia's softball team has opened the 2009 season on a 4-0 roll with two more wins in action today. They outscored nsic teams 13-3 in non-conference decisions at the husky dome classic, topping the university of mary 6-2 before downing st. Cloud state 7-1. The team is in action next february 20-22, playing six rocky mountain conference (rmac) teams in colorado springs, colo.

concordia took advantage of four marauder errors in their first game of the day on sunday on their way to a 6-2 win. They put four unearned runs up in the first inning, with sami mattson knocking out a 2-rbi single. Mattson drove in another run in the bottom of the third inning that gave cu a 5-1 cushion.

concordia out-hit the university of mary 8-7 in the game. cassye mcmahon got the win, working in coordination with jenn kaminski, who gained the save. Mattson and calli brennan each marked two hits for the golden bears.

in continuing the trends from their first three wins of the season, concordia kept the bats alive and put up several multi-run innings in the weekend's finale game against host st. Cloud state. A walk and three singles helped to score three runs in the second inning, while continued hits and a husky error put four more runs up in the second.

the golden bears took their 7-0 lead and allowed only one hit through five innings of work. The huskies got on the board with three consecutive singles in the sixth, but golden bear thrower stephanie schmikla closed the game out for another complete game win.

concordia knocked through 11 hits to scsu's five and played without an error. Four cu players tabbed two hits, while molly lenzi had a team high two rbi.
