Golden Bears off to best NSIC start with 4-2 victory over MSU Moorhead

st. Paul, minn. - in a day to honor the seniors freshman arielle stimson shined with her third consecutive two goal game sunday leading the golden bears to a 4-2 victory over msu moorhead. Concordia university moves to 7-4-2 overall and 4-1-1 in northern sun play, their best start in the conference in their 11 years in the league. msu moorhead scored first, midway through the first half on a goal by jordyn wallenborn and held the golden bears scoreless through the first half.

but concordia responded with a thundering second half effort.

the golden bears scored early in the second half with an unassisted goal by katie johnson to tie things up. She scored twice and produced an assist and now has seven goals and five assists in what has been a big senior season for the speedster.

stimson scored the first of her two goals at the 64 minute mark on an assist from emily weimelt to put cu ahead 2-1.

the lead was shortlived. At the 65:25 mark msu moorhead answered with another wallenborn goal, to tie the game at two.

but johnson scored her second goal just four minutes later at 69:25 in a battle at the net to put the golden bears ahead for good.

stimson's second goal was scored with four minutes left in the game on assists from kate campione and johnson on a play that johnson started near midfield by delivering a perfect ball to campione. Campione took it down to the right corner where she put a center pass to a streaking stimson in the middle of the box in traffic. Stimson slammed it home for her ninth goal of the year. She already has produced 21 points as a freshman.

cu held msu moorhead to four shots all of which were on goal. The golden bears attempted 14 shots with seven on goal. Cu goalie kaitlin budd logs her seventh win of the season, fourth in the conference with today's victory.

the golden bears will be on the road next weekend traveling to minnesota duluth on saturday, october 10 to take on the bulldogs at 1:00. On sunday, october 11 cu heads to bemidji to take on the bemidji state beavers. Gametime is 1:00 at bsu.
