Bats come alive as concordia sweeps augustana

The golden bears pounded out 23 hits, including nine extra-base hits as concordia (24-15) swept augustana college (15-20) in a pair of non-conference games 5-4 and 7-5 in sioux falls, sd, monday afternoon.

game 1 - concordia 5, augustana 4
the golden bears jumped on the board first when natalie mast (oakdale, mn) led off the game with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a walk to anna bjorlin (hermantown, mn). abby brundidge (nekoosa, wi) would double to left center to score mast, giving concordia a 1-0 lead.

concordia would add two more in the second inning on a pair of singles by josey olson (columbia heights, mn) and molly lenzi (st. Paul, mn). Brundidge would again double to left center to score olson and lenzi, giving concordia a 3-0 lead.

augustana's erin bollman cut into the golden bears lead with a home run off starting pitcher stephanie schmikla (madison, wi) in the bottom of the third inning.

the vikings would take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a walk and three hits, highlighted by a home run by anugustana's alli huber.

but the golden bears answered back with two of their own in the top of the fifth on a leadoff double by sami mattson (esko, mn), followed by a single to left field by nikki scherr (stewartville, mn). Freshman pitcher cassye mcmahon (rescue, ca) then hit a two-run single to centerfield to record her first career rbi and giving the golden bears a 5-4 lead.

schmikla would pitch three scoreless innings to earn the win. She allowed four runs, all earned on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

the golden bears had 11 hits in the game, with brundidge, mcmahon, scherr and lenzi each recording two hits in the game.

game 2 - concordia 7, augustana 5
the golden bears pounded out three home runs in game two, highlighted by two in the first inning by anna bjorlin and tiffani rodd (cloquet, mn), to give concordia a 2-0 lead.

concordia stretched the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when nikki scherr led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double to left field by cassye mcmahon. Scherr would score on an rbi single by josey olson.

augustana countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-1.

but concordia added three more in the top of the third when bjorlin led off with a single. She would score on a double by abby brundidge, who would later score on a double by sami mattson. Concordia now led 6-1.

brundidge would make the score 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning on her fourth home run of the season.

the vikings answered back with three in the bottom of the fourth and one in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-5.

after leading off the seventh inning with a double, concordia starting pitcher jenn kaminski (columbia heights, mn) was replaced by stephanie schmikla, who came in and got the final three outs and secured the win for concordia.

kaminski pitched six innings giving up five runs, only three earned on ten hits. Schmikla pitched walked one and struck out one in getting the save.

the golden bears scored seven runs on 12 hits. Brundidge, bjorlin, scherr and josey olson each had two hits in the game.

concordia will return to nsic action on tuesday at wayne state at 1:00 in double-header action.

notes - abby brundidge went 4-6 with three doubles, a home run and 5 rbi on the day.

stephanie schmikla got the win in game 1 and the save in game 2. She improves to 10-8 with two saves.

pitcher cassye mcmahon went 3-6 with 2 rbi as the designated player.

nikki scherr went 4-7 with two runs scored.
