Breakdowns catch bears in game three

anaheim, calif. - two high-powered offenses showed up at the anaheim convention center for the final game of the 2008 disney’s tip-off classic on sunday afternoon. The golden bears (2-1) played possibly their finest game of the weekend, but a late slump led to a 77-60 university of indianapolis (3-0) win.

the golden bears had their best offensive showing and played convincing defense against a highly talented u-indy team. When concordia’s offense was connecting on shots, the teams battled back and forth for the lead. But when shots ran amiss late in the game, the greyhounds opened a lead and became the champions on the women’s side of the tournament.

concordia ripped off the first eight points in the second half to overcome a 31-38 halftime deficit and take a 39-38 lead. Their defense frustrated an active u-indy into multiple turnovers and the game remained closely contested, tied up 50-50 with 10 minutes to play. The golden bears then fell out of rhythm as the greyhounds streaked out to a 70-51 lead. Concordia was unable to recover and took their first loss of the season, 77-60.

the golden bears saw welcome sparks from a number of players including kali olstad, who topped all concordia players with 14 points before being named to the all-tournament team. She also nabbed three boards and had two steals and an assist. gillian bjerke played particularly strong in the second half and was instrumental in the team’s fight through much of the period. She finished with 12 points, a team high eight boards and two assists. zoraa quoie had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and was also named to the all-tournament team.

candace olstad was just one of a number of players who played solid defense the majority of the game. She had three blocked shots and a steal to go with nine points. Both teams forced 16 turnovers in the battle.

the golden bears had a shooting figure that hovered in the mid-40’s for much of the game but sank to 37.7% (23-61) by the game’s end. U-indy’s shooting was similar to concordia’s through 30 minutes, but jetted up to 48% (24-50) by the final buzzer. The greyhounds hit the boards hard in the second period and finished with a 12 board margin, 40-28.

tournament mvp jessica canary led her squad with 14 points and ten rebounds. Samantha meissel was the leading scorer for the greyhounds with 6-of-13 shooting and three free throws for 15 points. Three other u-indy players finished in double figures for scoring.

action resumes for the golden bears with a home-opening tournament november 21-22. Concordia will face uw-lacrosse and metro state at the gangelhoff center for the 2008 wildwood lodge tip-off classic.
