Women's hoops opens with a bang!

anaheim, calif. - concordia university's women's basketball team (1-0) started the 2008-09 season out with a hot 67-47 win over central washington (0-1) on friday evening. The win came in the weekend-opening game at the disney's west coast tip-off classic.

concordia opened the season with 50 percent shooting in the first half to jump out to a 42-15 lead at the intermission. The wildcats turned the ball over and shot only 19.4 percent under the pressure of concordia's defense. The game opened with a golden bear 23-2 run, with central washington going without a field goal for more than ten minutes of play.

the golden bear team, growing into their new shoes, hit 6-of-10 first half three-pointers, including two each from kelly supernaw and gwen young. Supernaw led the team with eight first half points.

the wildcats improved their game in the second half, hitting 38.7% from the field and showing more aggression on the boards. As cu's bench gained meaningful minutes in a game with a spread of as many as 30 points, the wildcats began to chip away at the concordia lead. The closest the game would get was the final score of 67-47.

junior guard jamie jones showed seeming comfort in her new role as a starter, dropping in a team high 17 points and hitting 4-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Supernaw scored 13 points and pulled down four boards in her first game as a golden bear. The concordia rebounding game, which edged out central washington by a single board (42-41), was led by an unlikely player, guard zoraa quoie. Quoie showed promise filling big shoes in what was also her first game in a cu jersey, dishing nine assists. Senior candace olstad had nine points and three boards.

the golden bears finished their season opener with a 37.5 percent field goal mark (18-48) and had ten three-point shots sink. They had 14 steals on the evening and forced 28 cwu turnovers. The main difference in the score came from the charity stripe, where the aggressive golden bears hit 21 shots.

central washington was led in scoring by nicole jordan with ten points. Shaina afoa took charge on the rebounding front and pulled down 13 boards. The team shot 29.0 percent from the field (18-62).
