Wheelock saves 12, season ends in 1-0 shutout

st. Cloud, minn. - concordia university keeper keyton wheelock did her best to preserve the game in her final action as a golden bear and made 12 saves against st. Cloud state. Unfortunately the huskies shut out the golden bears and ended the team's season with a 1-0 win. Concordia went 6-14-0 this season and 3-10-0 in the nsic.

the win for the huskies was necessary and allowed them to advance to the eight-team nsic tournament that starts this wednesday, nov. 5.

concordia got off 11 shots in the first half and put two shots on goal, out-playing the huskies who took only nine shots. The huskies got a break just before the end of the first half, scoring a loose ball from 40 yards out. Tara evangelist was responsible for the score.

the golden bears aimed to tie the game in the second period, but only got off two shots in the period. St. Cloud state began to spit balls at the net, tallying 15 shots in the period, including ten on goal. Wheelock stopped every shot of the period, but her offense was unable to extend the game.

kari janes took seven shots in the game, a season high for the sophomore. She put one shot on goal. chloe weinberg had two shots and one on-goal. The team came up with 13 shots in the game.

the huskies had 24 total shots in the game and 13 shots on goal. They were the aggressors with 13 fouls and six corner kicks throughout regulation.

the golden bears played the season with a young squad and are hopeful that the experience gained this season will carry over to success in 2009. Freshman emily weimelt finished the season as the team's leading scorer with eight goals for 16 points. Another freshman, savannah nolen, scored one goal and had six assists her rookie year for eight points. The team's second-leading shot-taker in 2008 was kari janes, who booted 46 shots her sophomore season. Wheelock spent 17 games and 1,551 minutes in the net for concordia in her senior season. She finished with a 1.51 goal against average and made 149 saves.
