st. Paul, minn. - with a 3-0 mauling of minnesota state, the top-ranked golden bears have set a new school record for consecutive wins with 22 in a row. The win also ended a maverick eight game win streak. Concordia improves to 22-1 on the year and 11-0 in nsic play while the mavericks fall to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in the league.
the highlight of the three set win (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) was a game-opening 15-0 run behind the serving of maggie mcnamara. Mcnamara had 46 assists on 53 team kills. She currently leads the ncaa in assists.
maria steinhagen had her second highest kill total of the season with 14 on friday evening and committed just one error. She also had six block assists. ellie duffy matched steinhagen with 14 kills from the outside, a career high for the freshman. Sadie kessler also finished the evening's win in double figures for kills, putting down 11 and adding a solo block and four block assists. The mavericks, who entered the match leading the nsic in blocks, were outmatched at the net, nine cu team blocks to six.
concordia, who trailed only in the first points of the opening set, hit at a rate of .333 on the evening while keeping minnesota state to .119 hitting. The golden bears had 65 digs, led by whitney meierotto with 17, followed by mary slinger and mcnamara with 16 each.
minnesota state was paced by ashley nachreiner with 12 kills. They had 30 assists on 31 kills and came up with 43 digs. No msu player entered double figures on defense.
action at the gangelhoff tomorrow evening features a battle between two top-five ranked teams. The #1 golden bears will look for a regular season sweep over #5 southwest minnesota state. The action will be served up at 5:00 pm.
