Bears fall to Upper Iowa in double OT

The concordia-st. Paul women's soccer team (1-4) dropped a tough 1-0 loss in double overtime to upper iowa university (3-3) on friday afternoon at concordia field in a non-conference matchup between the northern sun schools.

in the 104th minute of play, the peacocks' amy campbell took a free kick after a csp foul from midfield. Her pass was taken by cara mauldin who delivered a shot just over hannah turgerson's outstretched hands from about 20 yards out.

the bears and peacocks played an even first half, with concordia firing six shots to uiu's five, both teams getting two shots on goal.

but in the second half, the peacocks took control, holding a 12-3 edge in shots with multiple scoring chances shut down by turgerson.

the bears had chances of their own with senior hillary johnson and sophomore kyla rentch each drilling shots off the crossbar.

on johnson's shot off the crossbar in the first half, concordia's sara sather fired a shot from inside the box and into the net. The goal was wiped away with sather being called offsides.

in the second half, kari janes put another shot past uiu goalkeeper sarah hiatt as time expired, but the shot was attempted just after the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime.

turgerson was outstanding in the net, making multiple athletic saves. She finished with 13 saves, facing 24 shots (14 on goal).

the bears continue their non-conference schedule this sunday, september 9 when they host st. Cloud state at 1:00 to close out their four game homestand.
